Medical Card for discounts at restaurants

Recommended Posts

Does anyone use their medical card given by your surgeon at restaurants (buffets)? I haven't been to a buffet in years and just happen to find it in my wallet today. Last time I used it, they gave me a hard time but still gave me the discount any way.

I only use it at buffets. I find that most of the kid's menus are full of fat, carbs and just general junk I wouldn't eat anyway. It has worked for me every time I've tried to use it. If it is ever refused at a buffet, I just won't eat -- no way I'm going to pay for a full buffet just to eat one cup of food or less...

Do all the surgeons give this medical card or do I need to inquire about it?

I can understand buffets, but I hope noone is using this for kid's menu items. Rarely do you find a grilled chicken and veggie entree. Smaller is not better. Save your money, eat an appetizer :)

I have the card, but have never used it. Aside from the kids menus being full of crappy food, I don't like to advertise that I had WLS. But THAT is just me. I'd much rather order a regular meal, and either take the rest home, or leave it behind. If I choose to leave it, either it wasn't very good, or I'm not going straight home & don't have a cooler in the car.

I have used the card many times. I live in the Boston area and one of my favorite restaurants lets you order from the children's menu. They have wonderful grilled salmon and grilled steak tips with 2 sides. The other day I had the salmon with green Beans (fresh ones) and mashed potatoes.

I used the card at a fancy steak house and got the filet mignon from the children's menu and a few weeks later the same place gave me a hard time.

At my doctor's office there was a form from Lap Band with a temporary card and then I got the real one a few weeks later.

For salmon and filet mignon, I would re-think my position on advertising my surgery :P

why? The filet on the kid's menu was 4 oz, exactly what I am allowed. The salmon was around the same weight for $11. and on the adults about 8oz for $18. I see nothing wrong with using the card.

I guess I'm still feeling somewhat "private" on the subject of my surgery. Showing the card would make me feel "different" somehow, and I've chosen to avoid it. BUT, there have been a couple of times when I thought I would show the card, but the kids menu didn't offer anything worthwhile. If I saw good, wholesome food, I would be more apt to "expose" myself

I only use the card with people who know about the band. Not everyone knows about it.

I'm with you mrsinto, I just order off the regular menu and bring the rest home. I usually have enough for at least 2 maybe 3 more meals. There are some healthy things at fast food but not on the kid's menu. Also, I had no idea you could get a discount with the card. I have my AARP card for most discounts already so no need to advertise I had WLS.

I think you misunderstood what mrsinto meant by his post.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
