Hello everyone :) I wanted to share my story with you so that I may help someone that is discouraged with what they are going through. I am 43 years old, I have been obese for several years now. I developed gestational diabetes 8 years ago with my youngest child and had kidney problems in my pregnancy and was on bed rest for the last 4 months. My son was born 7 weeks early and after a weeks stay in the NICU he was able to be in a regular room until he could go home. I suffered irreversible damage to my organs and I was diagnosed with Cushings Disease and type 2 diabetes. So over the years I have been battling with health issues and weight gain. I have been seeing a surgeon preparing for lap band surgery since January and was so excited on Friday, August 23rd, 2013 to finally go for my surgery. I was prepped, put to sleep, woke up after surgery with the nurse telling me everything went great and I was immediately so happy and praising God for this wonderful blessing. It was shortly after they moved me into recovery and then they let my husband come in to see me. I was so happy to see him but I could tell that he was apprehensive about something, he proceeded to tell me that I didn't get to have the band placed, I thought he was joking but he wasn't. I was just devastated, crushed, defeated and anything else that could describe major disappointment. He felt awful when I started to cry uncontrollably and couldn't stop. The Dr. Came in with pictures and was trying to explain that my liver is fatty and so enlarged that it just was not safe to do it. I stuck to the 10 day pre op liquid diet but it seems to have made no difference. He said to call and make an appointment for a week to discuss my options. I only have two inch long incisions to heal so I'm doing ok physically from the surgery but it's really so discouraging that I will have to go through more to see if I can do it again. I won't give up but I am disappointed in my surgeon for not telling me that I might have a problem, as he took out my gallbladder 3 months ago, why couldn't he have noticed that there could be problems with my lap band. I have an idea that I will be put on the 30-45 day liquid pre-op diet and it's so expensive for the special foods that we have to have. I paid $150.00 for just the 10 day diet. I am sorry to sound like Debbie downer here but I'm two days post op and have to heal from the surgery that didn't happen :(

That would be so frustrating. Hopefully this will just be a minor hurdle and you will be able to get banded soon.

I am so sorry this didn't work as you had planned. When you are battling other health issues all along and finally get to the point when you are mentally ready to tackle the weight issue is no easy task.... You just get so tired of dealing with one thing after another. I have lupus , had five children.. All c sections, and through years it has been one health issue after a other! It is so draining! Although I did get banded just a two weeks ago... I wanted to reach out to you to keep pushing. Although this a set back.. You still have to rally and move forward which is exactly what you and I and countless others have been doing all along in dealing with all these health issue. You are so close! Keep plugging..... You deserve this!

I am so sorry this happened to you.. I was aware of this sort of problem, and also know that weight loss is the one thing that will help to avoid it. Seems strange that you have to lose weight to get the tool to lose weight! I had lost 176 pounds prior to getting banded so my surgeon felt I would have no problems to the extent that I did not have to do a pre-op diet other than 1 day. But just remember you are better off as they were looking out for your health, I know it must be very disappointing but in the long run it will be a healthier road for you. Keep on going one day at a time and it will happen and ultimately you will be healthier for it. Best wishes to you for a fast recovery.

Hi, what a disappointment for you :-( .I didn't follow any particular pre op diet except milk and yoghurt. But my life saver for this period was oxo cubes ....chicken , veg and beef. They broke up from the monotony of dairy products and when I smelt other people food they tasted enough like Soup that I didn't mind them :-)....tomorrow is another day its now about getting back up and getting your head into that place again to prepare ! I was banded only 5 days ago, I have had several problems ....but the 2 stone so far lost doesn't make me regret it x

I'm sorry for you disappointment and hope that you will get your band sooner than you think. Try to keep in mind that everything happens for a reason, you could have gotten a defective band or any number of things. Just trust the process, no matter how disheartening it might be right now.

I am sorry that r going through this. Look at it as a higher power looking out for you yet again. Things don't happen as we would like them to or when we want them to but believe that it will happen when it suppose to. When u finally get banded a lot of other health issues will be address, the surgery will go more smoothly, your recovery will be easier, and you will be fit mentally and physically. Sometimes when life's disappointments comes my way I try my best to find a positive out if it. Look deep, hold steady, and be well. I'm praying for you!!!!

Why didn't the diet work? Was, it because of a medical condition?

I'm so sorry that you didn't get your band yet but I wouldn't blame your surgeon. I'm sure he felt that your pre-op diet would have been sufficient. That's something you can't predict until they open you up. Eventhough you had gallbladder surgery, there is no way to predict how fatty your liver will be until they open you up.

All I can say is keep your faith and keep praising God because He knows what is best for you. My heartfelt support and prayers are being sent your way so that you'll be able to be banded before you know it. If you're getting your pre-op diet from your doctor maybe he can work out a payment plan on the diet or give you a reduced rate on what you need to continue on your pre/op diet. My surgeon sells the Optifast program to his patients and I know it had to be paid prior to receiving it. However, if you have a good rapport with your doctor maybe he'll make an exception on payment. Best if luck to you.

I went today to see my Surgeon, he said after doing hundreds and hundreds of surgeries for lap band he has never seen a massive liver such as mine. He said one lobe of my liver is down below my naval. I have a month to think about things and decide if I want to try again for the surgery. He cannot guarantee that it will be successful. I will be praying hard for God to guide me in the direction I should go, if you pray, I ask you to please pray for me. I want to be free from Diabetes and other health issues so that I can be alive to watch my children grow up and have children of their own. Thank You and God Bless You!

Awe - so sorry - I will say special prayer for you that you may heal quickly! Heartbreaking - but thank goodness this was found when it was and now your doctors know what they are dealing with first hand as your doctor saw it himself. I wish you lots of luck and a speedy recovery - sending you good thoughts!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
