What Foods did you have to give up?

Recommended Posts

Since we are all different, what foods did you have to permanentlhy give up since being banded? :hungry: I am wondering what foods that either you can't get past the band, or just upset your stomach since banding.

I eat very little bread or bread products. It's just not worth the risk, in addition to the fact that those things made me need the band in the first place. pizza dough is a NO NO. NO Donuts. I just don't try it.

I haven't found anything I COULDN'T eat yet, (even after 2 fills) as long as I chew, chew chew, EXCEPT oyster on the half shell. Since I can't imagine chewing them, I guess they are permanently off my list.

Almost all bread, and especially tortillas were 'permanently' off my list. I'm stubborn, and still try them every now and then, and have found recently that I am able to eat them. I am also losing weight, so I don't feel the need to get a fill. I have heard of other people who have things on thier list of nonos that are able to eat them again later down the line.

I also have some trouble with eggs, but not always, and dry potatos. Yes, I eat potatos, lol.

Um... other than that, anything 'dry'. Not like chips, but like dry chicken, or fish, or any other kind of dry meat that is not supposed to be dry. If it's really dry, even adding a sauce to it doesn't help.

And while I do not usually have trouble with moist chicken, I thought I'd mention that I made some really moist cornish game hens for dinner last week and I am unable to eat more than 2 or 3 little bites of it at a time. I think the meat is too dense or something.

Rice, it is the devil. Rice seems to gunk up around my band and then make a surprise revisit later. My mother-in-law says I'm like a hawk, eating what I want and then spitting out what I don't need. Gross I know but that is how it works. I also don't chance bread, I do wheat crackers and oatmeal bars but no soft bread, it just isn't worth the effort to chew it well enough or risking the dreaded PB. Also when bread is properly chewed it becomes a playdough texture, yuck! ~Mandy

Nothing so far. Although I made a cake the other day and had some and cake is really really really difficult - much harder than bread.< /p>

these bands never cease to amaze me. I can eat cake with no problems, but 3 or 4 bites of bread and I am very uncomfortable. Strange how everyone reacts differently huh? ~Mandy

Hello everyone! My name is Reina and I'm new to this forum. I have bread only in the morning for Breakfast and it is only toast and it has to be really toasted, I also need to put lots of butter on it to make it more mushy, any other breads no...I haven't tried rice or Pasta and I'm really afraid to. I have found that eating cake depends on the type..like cheesecake is easy, creamed cakes are also easy...birthday cakes are ok depending if it is mushy!! I do fins myself eating a lot of nacho chips lately, especially with cheese and sour cream...that is great!! Otherwise the only time things really get stuck is if I forget to chew or I eat really fast..sometimes I forget myself. I haven't tried the PB and really afraid to do that to myself...since I have learned not to eat things that do get stuck...I don't try them for awhile....

Ditto Ms. Vicki, but I don't eat breads or steak anymore for simplicity sake. Fish is also a bit of a problem - go figure!

I can do steak if I have the butcher run it through the tenderizer (pounder) it comes out thin so it cooks quickly and is less tough. I can also eat ribeye, and ground sirloin. Fish is a problem if it is cook too dry, it trick is to keep it moist. I take frozen fish filets and wrap them in foil with a bit of lemon juice and what ever seasoning I want to use. I make the foil like an envelope and put it in the oven or on the forman grill until done. It always comes out nice and moist with loads of flavor and little to no fat. ~Mandy

I have no problem with rice or tortilla but I had my first PB on a bit of ravioli. Hmmm. I can eat chicken if it's moist or if I really, really, really chew it. I'm not even going to try steak. I was afraid to try salad until this week when I discovered it's no problem at all, which is great news. I hadn't realized how much I was missing salad until this week. Had a nice chef salad for dinner tonight, yum! I haven't found anything else that I can't eat yet. I'm just eating less of it! lol

I love a good ceasar salad with grilled chicken. I usually make it at home and add grilled dark meat (it is moister) and that makes a great dinner. I also do sliced roast beef from the deli (ask for it shaved) with a brown gravy packet (the kind you add 1 cup of water) but I add 1 1/2 cup of Water, then drop in the sliced shaved beef, I serve it with mashed potatos and peas. My family loves it, it's high in Protein and its quick and easy. (works with turkey and chicken too! Just use the correct gravy mix) It's a great way to still have meat and not PB. ~Mandy

Breads, Buns, French Fries and most fast food, (which is a good thing), chicken, anything really dry or doughy. No more Krispy Kremes here! Mostly it is trial and error for me. Somedays I can eat something and then the very next day it's on my no way list.

I can eat a bigger variety of foods if I have a cup of hot tea before my meal. The warmth seems to open up my band a bit. That is also the only way I can even consider Breakfast. ~Mandy

I'm curious about melted cheese on top of things - that consistency is gooey....can you all eat that? I would think no.

What about raw veggies? I'm totally surprised at the level of what can be tolerated. I would think raw veggies would get stuck because it's hard to chew them to mush. I'm in for a learning experience I'm afraid.

I did try tuna salad chopped really really fine yesterday and I was in heaven :) I have not ventured far from liquids since surgery and I wanted something different but am afraid to try...so I got brave and it worked :nanahump:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
