Pre-determination letter

Recommended Posts

Hi I am brand new to the site although I've been researching lap band for almost a year now. Anyway I have started to get the ball rolling and my insurance company says they will cover 90% of this surgery, all they need is a pre-determination letter frm dr saying that I qualify for the surgery. My BM is at 40 and I have no other major health problems besides being hypothyroid. I am scheduled to go to a seminar in Lubbock next week but I wanted to know who would be the dr that presents the pre-determination letter to my a insurance company? My regular practitioner or the surgeon? This site has been helpful so I thought y'all might give me a better idea about how this beginning part works. Thx!

Once you go to the seminar and let them know you're interested, the surgeon's office will have staff to help you through the whole process. They will tell you exactly what letters need to come from which doctors as well as any tests you need ahead of time.

Best wishes!

What Missy said. These WLS practices have the process down to a fine art. They will handle everything, let you know exactly what you need to do, what documentation you need, what tests you need and when and expedite everything. I am in the third month of my four month insurance company mandated hoop jump and so far, the process, while tormentingly long, has been nearly effortless and very smooth. :)

Nerves are normal. WLS is huge. And getting through the process, even with a surgical center that knows their stuff can be nerve wracking. :)

Hope it goes well! I have appointment with the surgeon next week! I used to be hyperthyroid and had an ablation so now I'm on the other end... One reason it's so hard for me to lose weight.

Hi glad to know there are ppl with hypothyroid on here besides me. Went to first appointment and my office submits letter via fax... Ins co said its alot faster if they submit by phone. How much harder is that for the office to do I wonder. I hate to bug them about it but I want to request them to call instead of fax I'm so anxious to get approved!!

My surgeons office told me it had to be the PCP or who ever was following your struggle with weightloss. The insurance company doesn't want to see a letter from the surgeon who is trying to sell you an expensive surgery but from someone who will be objective because they have nothing to gain but a healthier patient.

i see i guess everyone's insurance company is different. mine said they rather have surgeon submit it since that is who is doing surgery and has info they need etc...

Insurance companies differ in the way they require information from everyone. Even if it's the same company there could be different tiers of coverage that have different requirements.

The best thing to do is to call your insurance company and then give them what they ask for. Sometimes the surgeon's office will find out for you.

I like to take an active role in finding out what's needed and getting it to the right places, sometimes there are so many moving parts to getting this done, it can get complicated. I kept a file for myself of all my medical records and tests just in case something was missing I had a copy of it :)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
