I heard from my doctor this evening. He said that my hernia is small and not a barrier to getting the surgery I want.

Hello,

I had an upper endoscopy done yesterday, and the doctor discovered a hiatal hernia. Does anyone know if a hiatal hernia can be repaired at the time of banding, or is it required it be done before?

Thanks,

Rod

In the case of my hiatal hernia, which I did not know I had, the doc. repaired it during the banding procedure this past Thursday.

I had my hiatial hernia repaired then they slapped the band on. That was how the insurance covered my surgery.

I feel great---normal, in fact. I had minimal pain, and took only one pain pill the afternoon of the surgery. Since then, none.

I had my hernia repaired at the same time as the band. This was a blessing in disguise I belive. From the best I can tell, the band isn't causing me any pain. However the hernia repair isnt so pleasant. It's not completely miserable, but I know it was done. Turning and twisting is a problem. I have a large and taller truck that reminds me I had had hurnia surger. Taking deap breaths causes some discomfort. Burping is tough! Keep in mind I'm only a week out, but I'm pretty sure the lingering pain issues are the hernia and not the band. On a positive note, I've had zero indigestion since surgery. This use to be an almost daily issue.

Yes mine was repaired during my procedure. Also I had the plication done an additional procedure I found about on this forum. I asked my dr the morning of surgery and he said he would do it. It's basically like the gastric sleeve but stitched and is reversable unlike the sleeve!

I had a hiatal hernia repair as well when I was banded (Apr 12), I'm so glad my surgeon did it. I had no idea I even had one however I did experience heartburn and indigestion on almost a daily basis. Now, nothing! If they see it they should repair it at the same time, it usually doesn't take too much longer than if you were just being banded and I didn't notice the recovery being any worse but everyone is different. I don't know a lot about the sleeve but the band is adjustable, that was extremely important to me and has definitely proven to be a wonderful tool so far. Good luck! :)

I am scheduled to have surgery on 9/19. 4 weeks yay! The doctor is going to fix my hiatal hernia while he in in there. My insurance would have covered the surgery regardless but the doc said I will be getting a buy 1 get 1 free deal, with each lapband, get a free hiatal hernia repair, lol.

I had the lapband with plication done in may and I've lost ~30 lbs. I am very happy with the results and so is my dr. I just had my first fill last week and have enjoyed every minute of the experience. I eat when I'm hungry, not bored. I don't feel like food controls me anymore. Luckily, I can eat most things.. In moderation. I wouldn't change anything about the surgery. I would advise the plication to anyone with a dr that knows how to do it!

My hernia was bigger than expected, so my surgery was 45 minutes longer than expected. The recovery from that seemed a little harder than the incisions from the band. No more medicines though! I am a month out and I feel so much better. I know the band was the way to go for me. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
