got a question. Just got the "Big Lapband book" last week and have almost completed it. !. What is the dumping syndrome? 2. After surgery how do you sleep? I always sleep on my sides. Will I only be able to sleep on one side now because the portal will be on the other side? Will it be like that forever or will you forget it is even there after a while? Thanks to anyone who can answer

Not quite sure what the dumping syndrome is - but it's likely PB'ing or drinking after a meal, forcing food into your lower stomach much faster and creating hunger. You will be able to sleep normally after a few weeks with the band. I am a stomach sleeper and was able to go back to that sometime around week 4. As soon as your soreness is gone and you feel no pressure at the port sight, it's safe to sleep any way that is comfortable for you.

I hope this helps!

Dumping syndrome doesn't apply to Lap Band. It is a side effect of getting gastric bypass. Once you heal you should be able sleep any way you want. The port isn't that uncomfortable for most people. Especially the newer lower profile ones that have been out for about five years or more.

Dumping doesn't apply to Lap Band, only Gastric Bypass and Sleeve.

sleeping is a non-issue with the band. Once you're healed, you can sleep however is comfortable. I've actually slept on my stomach since the night of surgery without issue.

Guy and Missy are right. Dumping syndrome does not apply as a side effect of the Lap Band. Unfortunately for patients who have the bypass or sleeve procedure, dumping syndrome can be a painful and embarrassing situation caused by the rapid emptying of the bowels.

Usually triggered by greasy or high sugary foods as well as other types of carbohydrates.

For a while my port was tender after surgery but now I am able to sleep in all positions even flat on my tummy which is not good for my face! I tend to wake up puffy when that happens :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
