I was 18 when the subject came up. If I remember correctly, it was my father's idea. Just bring it up casually. Explain your reasons for considering it, and let them know you've been struggling with how much and what to eat. Just be aware, as I'm sure you know, the lap-band is a tool that will only help you lose weight. You have to be willing to make the necessary life changes that go along with it, otherwise you can run into serious health complications. If you're prepared for all that, just casually bring up the topic. Let them know you've done your research and if it's in the cards, they'll listen to you and you can all come to a solution that is right for everyone. My favorite thing to do when I was younger and wanted my parents to listen was to make a powerpoint or a speech and explain as professionally as possible why I wanted whatever it was I wanted and why my having it would be a great idea. My parents were suckers for thorough research! :)

Be aware, some doctors won't do the surgery on anyone under 18 years old. At 15, you're not finished growing into your body yet, so you might have a harder time finding a doctor who'll do it.

Best of luck to you, and it will all work out! :)

Coming from a parent my advise is be honest, Sit down with your parents and tell them how you feel, tell them everything. As parents we see you struggle but we don't know what we can do to help. Your parents only want the best for you, they just may not know what that is and if you don;t tell them then they will never know.

Talk with them, tell them how you feel and what you would like to do about it. Together you will find the best course of action.

Good luck to you.

I agree with both replies I'm 21 and for my birthday I gave myself the lap band. At the beginning of my journey I didn't tell my mom because my isn't very supportive and she talks a lot. But 3 or 4 weeks before my surgery somehow my mom found out and we actually sat down and had a real heart to heart about my decision and I'm glad we did. I have never been closer to either of my parents but they have both bee. There for me since me making my decision and I'm glad. I wouldn't recommend you waiting till the last minute to talk to your parents like me but just know that they just want the Best for you talk to them about and explain it to them and the benefits and how it makes you feel and how important it'll be for you. good luck and keep us updated!!!

Do you have any medical issues? You can start by talking to you pediatrician first and maybe he/she can be your advocate.

If you happen to live in New York City, I know that the NYU Langone medical center has a program for teens. You could ask your mom to go with you to an info session.

I think you're way too young to be making decisions like this. Try everything else first, get the tempting foods put of your house and start exercising and perhaps some therapy. Surgery is serious business...think about the reasons you overeat, is it emotional? Address that first, believe me, lap band does not fix emotional eating! Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
