I am going to be banded in Sept, about 3 weeks after school starts (I know, I should have had it done in the summer), right after Open House--I figured Spirt Week/Homecoming would be good because that week is a bust anyway. How soon will I be able to go back to teach, in your opinion? How did students and/or faculty respond to your weight loss? Were they nosy? How did you handle that?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I had my surgery in March and I told whoever asked, I was an open book my philosophy was why lie when maybe i can motivate someone to make a change.

I took two weeks off because that's what I was approved for but I could have gone back to teaching after a week.

Good luck!!

I'm not a teacher anymore, but still work at a school (more of a desk job now). I went back after a week and was very tired the first few days back. Not sure I could have stood up and taught all day after only a week. If you can, take two weeks. I told everyone I worked closest to and anyone else that asked. I would have never gotten the surgery if co-workers hadn't told me their experience with the band. I don't want to hide my experience in case I can help someone like me.

I am a high school sped teacher and have scheduled my surgery the Friday before fall break. I figure I will have a little more than a week for recovery and I am an inclusion teacher so there are 2 of us teaching. Should be ok, I have been very open even told my students about it. They were very sweet saying I am perfect the way I am. Lol they have no idea the pain that 288 pounds places on a five foot frame.

Everyone heals differently. I personally have a low pain tolerance, and I had ALOT of swelling which just now started to subside. However, I was banded on July 25th and it took me about three weeks to feel normal. If I had to go back any sooner I probably would have been miserable lol. But, with pre op dieting and post op I've lost 40 pounds and yesterday my co workers were being extremely nosey. They wante to know why I wasn't eating the bagel Breakfast and why I wasn't eating the sub sandwiches that our school provided for us. And I really didn't think people would care, so I was a little irritated lol. Teachers are nosey and like to gossip that's for sure

I'm not a teacher but have chosen not to tell my work colleagues yet ourely because I don't need any more pressure and don't want any negative opinions!

If people ask as the journey goes along I will be open about it!

I work with lots of nosey gossiping women!

I have extremely gossipy co workers so I did not tell them and am not telling then. I got banded over summer break. I went to visit over the summer school session and just said I'm eating healthier/less calories which is true and I'm exercising more which is Also true. This is my journey for me no One else's business. I think it's a personal choice and since I'm always dieting this isn't a great change. I figure I had the two months if summer to get used to my new life style. Lets see what September brings !!! Good luck :)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
