Have you had Lap Band surgery in Mexico? I can't afford the self pay price in Oregon. Is it worth the travel and risk? Any input would be appreciated.

There are some great surgeons in Mexico, however you must be very careful when choosing one. For instance, stay away from the ones that still use the outdated 4cc bands. The 4cc bands are no longer used in the US due to their very high rate of complications, but many Mexican surgeons still use them because they can get them at a cheaper cost.

Also, you need a bariatric surgeon locally to do your fills and manage your health. It's very important you find one before having surgery in Mexico because many American doctors won't touch a patient banded in Mexico so it's crucial you have one established ahead of time. Otherwise, you run the risk of coming home with a band no one to fill it or help you.

Just my personal opinion, but I wouldn't go to Mexico for any form of Medical Tourism, including weight loss surgery. I just don't feel like your health is something to "shop around" for the best deal on.

Best wishes.

Have you checked out Oregon Weight Loss Surgery?? That is where my doctor is, she is one of the top bariatric surgeons in the US, and she is number 2 in the amount of surgeries of this type preformed each year. In fact Dr. Patterson trains many other surgeons in the procedure. They are located at Good Sam in Portland. I'd check with them before I'd go out of the country. As Mis73 said many surgeons in the states won't touch a band placed in Mexico, so you need to look at the long range cost. Feel free to message me if you want more info on them.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
