Is it possible to lose too much?

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

Ive been a long time lurker, but have never chosen to post. I'm quite the intellectual type and an introvert also. For a little back round info, I'm a 36 yr old male the size and build of your average retired NFL defensive end. Until recently I was able to compete at the NFL combine strength levels, but injuries have forver changed how I'll be able to work out. Over time, my weight just kept growing due to my huge calorie intake to feed my growing muscles. On average 5-6000 calories per day. In the end, I was just not able to burn the fat down again after yrs of trying to grow. I opted to the band for help. I started this process a yr ago and finally admitted defeat on my own 2 months ago.

I started my 2 week liquid diet on July 28th at 309 and surgery is slated for Aug 13. Since then, I am down 21 lbs(288) and have a bmi of only 37% now. I'm concerned I'll dip below the magic number of 35%.

Has anyone else lost too much weight pre-op? Has anyone been disqualified?

Thanks in advance for any experiences you could provide.

Hello Ltnt,

My husband also played football and has more muscle mass than fat, although combined has put him in a considerably higher weight range than desired. I understand your issues/goals completely. Like you, he also bought an additional year to convince himself it was time for help. I think the band will help you considerably.

As for reaching a min BMI. I believe once you qualify for the band and insurance approves the procedure you are no longer on the watch clock per say. They prefer wl prior to the procedure to minimize fatty liver and to assist in a speedy recovery and this is per doc orders so it should not be an obstacle.

The weight that you register when you meet the surgeon is the weight that counts. I had the same question and also was under the BMI requirement quickly but don't fret, you are supposed to lose a ton of weight that is what the pre-op is for!

Your responses are quite reassuring. If it was just this easy to keep going on the liquid diet right down to my ideal weight. However, I know once off the wagon, the pounds come back slowly but surely. This liquid diet was far easier than I imagined. Except for being cold all the time now. Good Lord my metabolism has slowed way down. 800 calories a day isnt enough to keep a big man warm as 4,000 calories did.

Many thanks....

My insurance and doctor goes by the BMI that you start with as long as you don't drop below 30 your okay with my insurance etc. With that being said I know all plans are different. You should be alright.

That would totally suck if you lost too much weight early on and they were like, SUCKS TO BE YOU! and didn't let you get the surgery. Lol. Glad it's not set up like that. Good luck!

When I show up for surgery tomorrow I'm not going out of my way to find a scale. They made me weigh in last week to verify I was on the liquid program. I obviously cant hide the weight loss if they insist I weigh in. I'll give you guys a for sure answer tomorrow after I get banded. Game on!

Got in today and they weighed me in. I was worried! Today I was 282.2. That was a loss of 27 lbs in 14 days. Not sure that's real healthy, but I was following the dr's orders.

Long story short, I'm resting quietly in my hospital bed with a new outlook on life! Thanks for your help gang!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
