lap band mood swings, reflux and all night coughing

Recommended Posts

Please dont get me wrong this is a success story but i need someone to help me out. So i had the band almost 3 years ago and everything was fine until i loosend the band before goin on a long vacation, i still love and enjoy food:)

When i got back i tightened the band again, but its still not the same. I eat awful alot. I even sometimes feel that my band has mood swings. I am not sure why some days i can eat as much as a large combo from Mcdonalds and other days i'm simply blocked why is that any one knows?

Also i cough alot and i get reflux when i sleep even if i eat early. Why is that. I really need to tighten a bit since i gained 3kg. What do you think. Shall i do that even though i reflux and cough all night ? Thanks for your help in advance

My LB nurse has said that reflux and night time coughing are a sign of too much restriction. I would head back to the Dr.

well eating a large combo from mcdonalds is (alot) for banders in my opinion..best to eat your allotted amount size that the doctor advised you in the beginning.

I'm very against taking out Fluid and putting it back just for vacations just for this reason. I'm not knocking you but this should be a tail of caution to others. If you're in a good place with your band, DO NOT MESS WITH IT! Lol. When you take fluid out and add it back in it can shift and sit differently than it did before. You actually sound either too tight or like you may even have a dilated pouch. I would definitely talk to your doc's office about it.

Reducing your restriction to go on vacation is not a decision based on sound judgement, IMO.

Reflux at night and coughing indicate you may be putting yourself at risk to develop aspiration pneumonia. It is also a sign as others have posted that your band may be too tight.

Definitely consult with your medical team to determine what is happening. These potential complications should never be ignored.

It reads to me that there is still some inaccurate thinking going on with you and your relationship with food. We still need to make healthy choices when it comes to meals regardless how much we enjoy eating.

I don't think I am too tight since I eat a lot. Well my doctor is good but he didn't really give me any restrictions on food except not to eat sugary stuff, chips and nuts. Yes, playing around with my band was not a good decission, but the reason was that I really couldn' t wat much. Not an excuse though!

that's all your doctor told you? do you have another option for a doctor, one with better after care support?

I am not sure is it possible to change doctors post the operation? I mean the doctor needs to maintain the band right? Can you tell me a bit more.

The surgeon is only one tiny part of getting the lap band. The biggest part is the after care. Nutrition support and advice, monitoring of fills once a month, tweaking and tinkering as you have issues, etc. The lap band is definitely not a set it and forget it WLS.

I do think it's possible to change doctors after the operation, though it might be a little bit of a hassle. But if you're getting no support, I would say it's probably worth the hassle!!

Here's the aftercare website for my medical center. Not saying you should go here (though it's amazing) but I thought it would be helpful to post for reference for what some places do: http://thinforlife.med.nyu.edu/surgical-weight-loss/after-surgery

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
