Hey Lauren - I would love to be your buddy to share experiences with, but you would have to be my mentor, I will be banded in 9/6. I'm Jan and live in Thomaston, GA. How are things going for you so far? How are you feeling?

I will have my surgery in three weeks, I'm more than excited! How have you done so far? What has been the downside of lapband? How's your hunger level?

Well I was used to eating whatever I wanted whenever I wanted so the cravings for me have been pretty bad especially in the first liquid stages now that I'm on mushies it's getting better, but I'm still pretty hungry but the I take a couple bites and I'm done, I get satisfied really fast, I'm 12 days post-op and I've lost 16 pounds so its definitely worth it, I don't regret it at all but it does take some time to get used to, I did go through the completely NORMAL regretful phase where I asked myself "was this really worth it" but you get through that and it gets better and everything starts falling into place, I did have my first semi-stuck episode today which was scary but I got though it!

What did that stuck feel like?

Umm like I said I'm not sure if it was actually stuck but all of a sudden I had this panic feeling come over me and kinda like this burning sensation come up me and I just felt like I had to stand up and walk and when I did that I started to feel better, so then I burped like 3 times which helped lol but I still felt weird like something was in my throat so from there on out I just walked and drank Water and eventually it went away, all I was eating was some potato and broth Soup so I don't think it was necessarily stuck I just think I was eating to fast.

One guy posted on here a really graphic description of what happens when you get stuck, he said that you don't actually vomit, but it's more like how a bird regurgitates to feed her babies, that it simply slimes back up. He said typically it happens when you eat too fast or too much, that you will first start feeling your saliva accumulating and then all of a sudden, the food just comes back up. I'm glad he posted that because it really makes me think and hopefully will make me more aware when I am eating or drinking because I just don't want that happening!

I see that you are in Albany or Allbenny, who did your surgery? Dr. Bagnato is doing mine and he still practices there as well as in Macon.

Some time before or after your surgery did you meet with a nutritionist or someone who went over all the do's and don'ts about what to eat and how and how to drink, etc.?

Dr. Bagnato did my surgery! And no I didn't meet with a nutritionalist I've just been calling up to the office when I have questions, are you getting one?

I didn't know if a nutritionist was part of the deal or not. Small world isn't it? I love his staff and they are so helpful. I have been emailing the daylights out of one of his nurses who has had lapband surgery. It is my understanding that most of his staff in the Macon office have had lap band and it's pretty cool that they know what you're going through. So when did they give you all the information that you would need?

I go on the 21st which they said was my follow up appt for my hiatal hernia, and they didn't mention any more visits, so maybe I will know more next week. Can you tell that I'm a little anxious. Yeah, I'm self pay too, had my first visit 8/6, endoscopy 8/13, and surgery 9/5.......so it's been a whirlwind, but I'm ready!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
