Just banded and uncomfortable after eating

Recommended Posts

I was just banded on August 5th and can only tolerate liquids meanwhile my surgeon said, starting on the 6th I could start the mushy diet. However, about two hrs ago I was able to consume a tiny amount of yogurt, but it took an hr. its a whole new world which I was expecting but the severe tightness is incredible. One thing, I do have to ask is the day I came home surgery I weighed myself and I was 3.5 pds more, but i didn't eat anything in two days- is it the fluids and being swollen?

Thanks :)

Banded July 30th. I too gained 2 pounds and was told it was the iv fluids they pump in you during surgery. The first 2 days were the same for me. Just take smaller sips and day 4 was really when all the gas had left me and I was able to sip fluids without discomfort! Day 8 now and my stomach growls constantly but I feel great! Take it one day at a time! :)

Hey all' date=' I was banded two days ago and have had an uncomfortable tightness after eating today (soup and vege juice only). Is that normal? It almost feels like a stitch in my left side?[/quote']

You should be on Clear Liquids for about a week because you're still swollen. Vegetable juice is probably too thick and acidic right now.

I was banded a week ago (8/1) and was able to start mushy foods (thin oatmeal, strained cream Soups, yogurt, etc) as well as doing my liquids and I'm having trouble as well. I end up feeling like I have a knot in the center of my chest. I need to take my own advice, but seriously take is super slow. Take a sip, let it go down, then do another. I've found that it helps a lot.

Also try some ice on the site and try sipping some Decaf tea no milk or Creamer. That sometimes helps. Another good way to get Fluid in is in the form of ice pops they help a bit with internal swelling as well.

Feel better!

It's day 4 for me now and I've realized that the discomfort I've been having is definitely gas. I wake up in the morning and feel fine, then as soon as I have something to sip, the pain starts and lasts for a couple of hours. The pain is to the left of the port site and radiates to my left shoulder. So trying to sip less and sip slower..

As for the weight gain, I too have put on 3 pounds since the surgery. But have been told to expect that because of all the fluids that have been pumped into me. So I'm trying to be strong and not look at the scales for a week or so!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
