aschaer 6 Posted August 6, 2013 Hey all - I've had the band for about 5 years now. Does anyone have trouble when they travel? I've been traveling a lot for work lately and everytime I get SO tight where I can't eat at all. Anyone else have this problem? Normally I can eat just fine, barely ever PB. 1 2muchfun reacted to this
Cocoabean 430 Posted August 7, 2013 I do. It doesn't matter the mode of travel either. I think it is just the stress of it all. 1 GuyMontag reacted to this

My surgeon said to just drink when traveling by air and it will cause your band to get tight. Are you talking about air travel by chance?
aschaer 6 Posted August 7, 2013 Yeah, by flight.. I've been drinking tons of Water and it doesn't help
skb123 308 Posted August 7, 2013 Yeah, by flight.. I've been drinking tons of Water and it doesn't help Well only drink on the plane don't try eating, that's what I was told. Has to do with air pressure on the band. 1 n2win reacted to this
2muchfun 8,927 Posted August 7, 2013 Went to Red Lodge Montana July 25th-29th and had the same problem. Went out for Bfast with some friends at the local diner and got stuck in 2 bites. No one knew about my surgery so it was rather embarrassing to just sit there with this huge omelet I'd never eat. It continued throughout out stay but mostly mornings and noon. Nights were OK but I had to really eat small and chew a lot. 1 n2win reacted to this
aschaer 6 Posted August 7, 2013 Yeah I've been in DC since Sunday (came from Denver) and I've had this issues since I got here. Late night snacking works but morning and lunch I can only have a few bites. And I'm in the same boat, I'm at a conference where food is catered and I've got this huge plate in front of me and others at conference do not know about band so I just keep telling them my stomach has been uneasy with travel. :-/ 1 n2win reacted to this
Terry Poperszky 2,784 Posted August 7, 2013 I just spent the week at Yellowstone, which is about a 3-4 K altitude increase from where I normally live. I found out the first day that things were going to be different, it was like I had just gotten a fill. My LB nurse had warned me to expect it, as many of her patients had reported the same reaction to altitude. 2 n2win and 2muchfun reacted to this

GuyMontag 1,264 Posted August 7, 2013 You might try a little liquid motrin before the flight and it sounds like you have the right idea with lots of Water. Watch out for airplane peanuts...salt! Lol. 1 n2win reacted to this
aschaer 6 Posted August 7, 2013 First day that I've been able to eat "normal" since I've been here. Think my body just needed to adjust to the difference.
n2win 123 Posted August 7, 2013 This has been interesting to read. I have never considered difficulty from: flying the friendly skies! We have a trip planned in the spring for Rome and I will have to make the necessary accommodations.
Carol.mcpherson 25 Posted August 8, 2013 Question for those banded travelers!!!! I'm getting my first fill August 20..(surgery date was July 25). I am going to be flying 6 days after my fill and will be at a conference for three days. It makes perfect sense that altitude can cause tightness..should I postpone my fill till I get back in case I have any issues? I plan on calling doc office in the morning but would appreciate your feedback!! Thanks!!
ansoninc 16 Posted August 8, 2013 I had to fly cross country about a month after I was banded. I ate part of a baked potato while waiting for my flight. Suddenly I started getting very loud gas bursts. Lucky for me the gift shop was open so I bought a box of Gas-X. From then on I always travel with a box of them in my purse. 1 n2win reacted to this

I've been banded 4 years and I experience this as well. Something else to consider is are the places you are traveling hotter than what you are used to ? liquids expand with heat and make your bad essentially tighter! I actually go to my surgeon and he takes some Fluid out before I go on trips to Florida for instance. 1 n2win reacted to this
