NEED tips: eating & drinking

Recommended Posts

I was banded July 16th; saw the nutritionalist on July 25th; and scheduled for 1st fill tue (aug 6th).

My information instructions are extremely vague so I'm turning here for help.

What are some guidelines about chewing?

(all my packet says is to chew well)

What size bites do you take?

(my packet says small---define small)

What are some tips on drinking?

esp. taking smaller sips? (I still catch myself gulping)

Any information is appreciated!! I do not want to fail and not sure where else to find this information.

My doctor says....

Bites no bigger than a dime or your pinky nail.

Chew until mush about 30 seconds depending on the food.

Minute between bites.

As for drinking sometimes my band makes me sip my Water and other times I can gulp. Depends on the day and how my band is feeling.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Put your utensil down between each bite while you chew.

I would say a good size bite is about the size of an acorn if you're tight to about the size of a walnut if you're loose.

If you can gulp and it doesn't come back up then gulp away.

It's hard learning these methods for eating when you don't need to yet. Hopefully if I continue to practice these habits, by the time my band actually starts restricting my diet I will have learned how to eat with it.

I chew until I don't feel like there are solids left. Often I'll take a bit, chew, swallow part of it, chew, swallow the rest.

I agree with the above poster. If you can gulp your drinks, then you are fine. You're not doing damage and you'll know if your sips are too big.

As far as bite sizes, it could vary based on the type of food you are eating. For example, I try to cut Protein down to the size of my ring finger or pinky finger nail. If a softer food, I go larger (a nickel or so).

Good luck!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
