mrsto 2,925 Posted August 3, 2013 It's an autoimmune thyroid disease, causing hyperthyroidism. It's controlled with medication, and sometimes radioiodine treatment. There are many other treatments, but I'm not up on all of it. An old client's daughter had it, and that's when I became aware of the disorder. I have Hashimotos, which is also an autoimmune thyroid disease. With that, comes the opposite issues of Graves; hypothyroidism. I always joked that I wish if I have to have a thyroid disorder, that it was Graves......because with being hyperthyroid, comes weight loss But it's just a joke......because the issues of Graves disease can be very serious. I hope your DIL has a good doctor, and gets the proper course of therapy to get it under control. An endocrinologist would be the best option. 1 ☠carolinagirl☠ reacted to this

I just hope that she's able to hook up with a good doctor in the UK. It is very sad about her not being able to have more kids. But just the fact that she already has children (or at least one child), is a blessing. 3 ☠carolinagirl☠, chasingadream and Debbie3sons reacted to this
Joy332 25 Posted August 3, 2013 One of my best friends had this. She had lots of side effects--high blood pressure, inflammation of eyes, and actually gained weight. She chose to do the radioactive iodine treatment and now takes synthroid. Barbara Bush had graves's too. 1 ☠carolinagirl☠ reacted to this
skb123 308 Posted August 3, 2013 my daughter in law just told me that she has this i have done alittle reading on it, but wanted to ask if anyone on this forum has this or know of anyone who has/had any feedback welcome. My oldest daughter has it. It was brought on by the birth of her first child 4 years ago, she is 40 so she had her babies late. They medicated her than her thyroid went the other way. But she no longer has the buggy eyes. Her doctor said many times it is brought on my some sort of trauma to the system in her case it was having a baby. She did have to have invetro to have her 2 babies. However it does run in the family, she has a cousin on her dad's side who also has it. Strange thing in all of this is my other two daughters have hypo thyroid, So they all 3 have problems with their thyroid and I do not and their dad did not. 1 ☠carolinagirl☠ reacted to this
mrsto 2,925 Posted August 3, 2013 When I was diagnosed with Hashimotos 23 years ago, I was told that another female (mother of sisters) in my family had to have it. For this particular condition, that's what they used to think. Neither my mother or my sisters have thyroid issues. Now, years later, they no longer say that. It can come on independent of family history. 1 ☠carolinagirl☠ reacted to this
