Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I wanted to start a feed for all of you past or soon to be banded, people that traveled to missisaga to have your surgery done at smart shape by Dr. Coburn. I've heard he's amazing and I had a Skype chat with him this week. But I want to hear about your experiences and any tips for my travels.

Hi

Wonderful surgeon, experience, clinic, hotel everything! Dr. C and team were very patient, professional and thorough. He is concerned about every patient. I went from 220 lbs in Feb 2013 to180 lbs Jul 2013 - 30 lbs to go and it hasnt been that hard. Surgery was Feb 2013. What I found was that I had to understand the biological process the band played in your body and work with that. Up until understanding that I wasnt able to utilize the full benefits of the band. The Nutrition webinars put on by SWLC are a must. You may be able to take one now if you want to learn more. Your head has to be in this game 100%. There are many that the band does not work for because they are not ready to commit. I did have alot of shoulder pain after the surgery which is rare and even today if I eat say nuts and maybe dont chew well or crackers, something hard, I can feel it in my shoulder which is quite rare I'm told. (Not sure if that makes me special or strange?!)

I would be more than happy to talk more to help out or answer any questions. Support from peers I have found to be very important and to trade tips, vent or just generally ask questions.

My email is edergm@shaw.ca.

It's the best thing I ever did!

lots of luck

Gayle

I found a heating pad really helped with left shoulder pain... my only lasted for 3 days. That's the only pain I had. Walking also helped.

You will love Dr. C. He has been a guest speaker an several of my coffee groups.

Dr. Confirm did my surgery as well. He is an excellent doctor but more importantly he has an excellent support staff. I would highly recommend him.

I was a patient of Dr Coburn, at the Mississauga smartshape weight loss clinic. I have to say that I was nervous about the surgery but after talking to the nurses and meeting them in person, the fear was over. They are very professional and very nice people.. I am amazed how well I was treated before and after the surgery. I would recommend them to anyone who has doubts or scared to make that life change..

Chris they treated me very well. I had minor problem the day after surgery and the nurse came right to my hotel to take care of the problem. Good luck with it. I had my surgery on June 12th and have lost 80 lbs (this includes the weight lost on the liquid diet). I am very happy with the results.

I just had my surgery with Dr. Cobourn on October 18, 2013. I have to say that he made me feel at ease with the whole procedure. The staff was amazing and I can see that they all genuinely cared for my well being. Dr. Cobourn called me the next day to see how I was feeling and just to ensure that I had another chance to ask questions. Today a nurse followed up with me since they know that I had to fly back to Alberta yesterday. They checked to see again how I was feeling and reminded me that support is available if I need it and I should call if I have any questions or concerns. This doesn't even include the follow up emails from the patient coordinator and the nutritionist. I do believe that I will be consistently leaning on these people in my journey and I could not have chosen a better group of people to do this with.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
