Some questions from a newbie

Thanks for all your thoughts!!!

This learning to eat differently has been a little more difficult than I thought it would be. I haven't really been hungry yet but I'm not sure when exactly I'm full. I just feel a lot of pressure and then I quit. Is that what it feels like? The only incision that is bothering me is the one that they put the port in, which makes sense. Can you always feel the port or am I just aware of it because it's still a little sore? Did anyone else get heparin injections post-op. They said they were for DVT's. Everything seems to be going OK. 5 days post-op and feeling pretty good. Thanks again for all your thoughts!!

Hi Kathy,

It will take a while before you know what full feels like. I am assuming you are still on liquids at this stage of banding. Pressure is a good sign to stop. At the moment, any restriction you are feeling is swelling post op.

I don't know where they put your port, (I am assuming on the left lower part of your abdomen. I feel my port occasionally when I am wearing tight jean or restrictive clothing, but I really don't notice it any other time. Everyone is different. In the beginning, I felt it, but nowadays I hardly know its there.

I received heparin shots in the hospital, but did not receive anything after I left.

My port is just under my sternum. I couldn't feel it at first, but now that I've lost weight, I have to make sure there's some padding under me when I lie on my stomach. Otherwise, no problem.

Hi,

Yes I feel my port. It has been close to 6 weeks now and I feel a port. It is under my left breast and it feels like a bump. I am not sure what full is either yet. I think I am starting to get it but 40 years of bad habits is hard to change. I can't wait for my first fill. Good advice, make sure you eat slow and chew chew chew. Yesterday is the first time I felt sick to my stomach. I ate too fast and did not chew well. All I had was a salad with some chicken and a half a sandwich and let my tell you I thought I was gonna pass out. The feeling was horrible. It was like something got lodged in my throat like bread was stuck in my throat and the pain was not good. So make sure you follow protocol there is a reason for it. Good luck!! rwarren

Thanks for all your comments and warnings. As a newbie it is reassuring and comforting. My port is on the right about waist band level. The discomfort has gotten better. I did find out that the restriction I am feeling is indeed swelling and my doctor said it can get worse through the third week, then should begin to subside.

Thanks Again :Bunny

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
