Weight gain!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, well my lap band baby is 8 months and I gained about 35 lbs during pregnancy. I had a lil trouble after the baby with tightness but it got better after going on liquids for a couple of days. Now I feel like I've totally lost control and have gained an additional 15 lbs since giving birth. This is my third so fitting in workouts is hard and squeezing them in at night is sometimes discouraging since I'm so off track. I can eat large portions and when I eat small portions I am hungry an hour later, if I eat the wrong things like bread I still pb. I am still nursing so I don't know if I should get a fill. Any advice on getting back on track, I feel like a total failure!

First of all don't feel like a failure! You just had a baby, your still nursing and you need some time to heal. Your body has just been through one of the most dramatic and traumatic things a woman can go through and you have a beautiful baby now.

I have 3 sons and 2 step sons so I know it can be so difficult to get any time for yourself, but when you can take it. Even if you are going for a stroll with the baby on a beautiful summer morning. Running after the kids is going to help get you back into shape. Add them into the routine, make them part of it with you they will love it.

I would wait on the fill till you are done nursing because you need the extra nutrients to pass along to the baby. Just watch the things you are choosing to eat larger portions of, and once you are done nursing make an appointment for a fill.

Most of all be kind to yourself, that is the first step in getting back on track to take care of yourself.

Congratulations and Best of Luck to you!

The only thing I didnt pick up was whether or not you had any unfills during pregnancy.

I would contradict the previous posting and say that it is safe for you to get fills at this stage.

One year after getting banded, I too got pregnant. I kept my band filled at "green". I gained 18-20 lbs with my 3rd son and we both did perfect. I nursed him and he gained like a champ, and this is still in 'green'. As a heavier person, you have reserves. As long as you take supplements you will be able to provide all the nutrients to your baby whilst losing weight. In reality, breastfeeding should help propel wl.

Speak to your dr. about your concerns, get their feedback. You can take precautions like weighing you and baby frequently (ie weekly) to ensure everyone is growing :)

Thanks ladies, I didn't touch my band at all while I was pregnant it stayed the same since I didn't have any problems during pregnancy. However I recently moved to Oklahoma from California I will be going out to Cali in November so maybe I can schedule a visit w/ my LB dr and talk about it that will be my one year mark with nursing so maybe I can get a fill then. I've been getting impatient and hate seeing my old self creep back. My baby only nurses and is eating some solids now but would it be a bad idea to do the two day liquid two day soft food thing to "reactivate" the band? And does anyone know if that works?

Breast feeding uses up to 500 cals per day ... It is no wonder that you are hungry. I would try making healthy choices with your band as-is. Good solid Protein to help you feel full longer. Just MO.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
