I met with my dietitian today and was told about my pre-op diet. I was concerned because I have been reading about people who were put on a strictly liquid diet before surgery. My dietitian however would like me to go on a 1000 Calorie diet that consists of eating regular food. I don't know why they have me doing this but it makes me nervous. I would rather not eat regular food before surgery because I feel like I'm not going to stop myself from overeating.

Has anyone else had to have a 1000 cal regular food diet before surgery?

my doctor gave me a list of things i could eat and how many calories and i knew it was to much for me so I did my own. I drank a Protein shake for Breakfast, another Protein Shake for lunch, ate a lean cuisine for dinner and had a sugar free fudgsicle for a bedtime snack. worked great. I lost 10 lbs.

Good luck

my first question is when is your surgery? my surgery will be Sept 4th and my dietician put me on a diet to start the discipline process. then....10 days before my band, I will be on a liquid diet. the liquid diet will also carry over to the post op diet. I have lost 16 pounds so far doing my pre op diet-diet.

Every Doctor is different. Mine was very strict that I have nothing but liquids for 2 weeks before surgery, then on the other side my friend who has also got the surgery 2 months before me was only required to do 7 day diet before surgery that was under 1000 calories and the day before surgery was liquid. She has been doing wonderful! I hope everything works out for you! I'm excited and looking forward to hear from you after surgery! :D

My surgery is not scheduled yet because I am playing the 30 day waiting game with my insurance company.

The dietician said they do not want their patients drinking a liquid diet before the surgery because it is not realistic of the life after surgery. I thought the purpose was to shrink your liver and your stomach. The foods they allow your to eat beforehand are restrictive healthy foods, but still, I'm sucking at doing that diet now let alone when I have to decrease my 1800 calories diet to 1000!

My preop diet consist of the following: 3 slim fast shakes per day. I put the can of shake in my blender with ice and i scoop of 30 gms of Protein Powder for Breakfast. I have the other shakes for lunch and supper. My doctor said it doesn't matter if I lose weight , but it is to shrink my liver before the surgery. I will be having my surgery Monday afternoon at 1:30 on August 5th. The preop diet is very hard, and takes will power. It is hard not to eat solid food, especially cooking it for the family! I am doing this, and I can not wait until Monday!

Obviously do what your doc says. Pre op diets are usually to shrink your liver. All docs are different and so are the patients. Your pre op diet is based on your bmi the higher it is the more restricted/long your diet. Mine is 3 weeks, 2 Protein Shakes, and one healthy meal (4 oz lean meat, 1 cup veggies and 1 cup fruit).

I believe the pre-op diet serves 2 purposes a) reduce the liver B) give you a chance to prepare for the post op diet. Pre-op diets seem to fluctuate based on which of these (if either) a surgeon feels the patient needs to focus on.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
