Herniated Disc In back

Recommended Posts

Has anyone suffered with herniated lumbar disc's? I've been suffering for well over a year, since I've lost the 50lbs, my feet are killing me. It's affecting my ability to work out because I feel crippled afterwards. I saw the spine center dr yesterday and he recommended one more test then spine surgery.

However, I do not want surgery. I am not willing to undergo this. Any ideas or sucessful experiences with non-surgical herniated discs? I was also told by the dr that I pose a big challenge, because of my unstable weight. Which is a good thing.

I feel a little defeated. I had WLS in an effort to see if my back would heal up and it's gotten much worse. I am dealing with alot of pain but hardly talk about it. Since, I've been so happy after my RNY.

Hey I hope you feel better Jennifer. My Dad had those way back when and had surgeries. If you can stay away from that then by all means do it. It didnt help him all that much. They did a fusion of the spine a couple of years ago and that has helped more than anything. I wish you luck with this. I have watched my Dad suffer too long with those. Hopefully they can fix yours and make it right.

Angie

I would have thought the weight loss would relieve some of the disc problem as well. Have you considered some physical Water therapy? My dad had a horrible time with herniated discs and even had surgery without a lot of difference like you said, but the water and physical therapy seemed to help some. I am not an expert by far, but just thought I would pass that along. You are a brave individual!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
