When to get an "un-fill"

Recommended Posts

I am a 63-year old woman who had lap-band surgery 3 years ago. After my last fill, my ability to eat has been drastically altered. At this point, there are days I can eat barely anything, and I throw up multiple times a day. I am seeing the doctor next week, but he seems to be hesitant about loosening my band. I now weight 106 lbs, down from my high of 238 when I was banded. Does anybody have any advice about how to talk to the M.D. about loosening my band? I feel weak and am very unhappy about not being able to eat anything normally. I just want to get to the point where I can eat small portions of healthy foods. Isn't that what the band is supposed to do?

Be up front and honest with your doctor. He can only help you if he knows the whole story and all the facts. You should never be so tight that you cannot eat or drink...ever! Band is not for that. You should tell him/her everything so you are sure to get proper attention. Perhaps its not a matter of an overly tight band? Maybe something else perhaps a slip? I am not trying to make you worry or start doubting but if you are not honest and up front with the Doc he could simply give you the un-fill without even looking at the possibility of other complications.

Wish you the best of luck. Let me know how it goes.

Definitely call ASAP to get that band loosened. You should not be vomiting every time you eat. Best wishes. Karen

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
