about to be banded

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled to go in on May 18th for my band. I wanted some experienced people to tell me what my recovery will be like. I know what my doctor says, but I want to know when I will be up and about.....for real.:help: What kind of positions will I not tolerate. How long before I will be comfortable driving a car...as I spend alot of time behind the wheel for work. The real nitty gritty stuff that I should be prepared for. I want to know the about the things they don't really mention prior to surgery.

I was up and walking (more like shuffling) around a couple of hours after surgery. Walked around a lot, which helped with the gas. Went back to the hotel the next day (I was in Mexico) and was a bit tender, but no pain. The day after, they shuttled us to the border and we had to walk several blocks after passing the border. No problems. I had no problems walking at the airport.

It is tender when laying down, and getting up. I had 18 month old twins and I couldn't pick them up for a bit, but they were able to sit on my lap if I had a pillow against my tummy. I was able to sleep on my tummy after the first couple of nights, but most people complain about not being able to get comfortable sleeping...

I drove a few days after the surgery. It was not a problem with my incisions. I really had no pain, just tenderness.

BUT, I was exhausted for well over a week. I was so tired. It was all I could do to stay awake during the day. I think that was from the general...

Michelle, Well as I have found out on this board everyone is different, but I had no problems except a little gas pain one day only and malox took care of that. Other than being sore for about four days there were no problems.I had no kind of pain meds. My hubby had to help me in bed and out twice and that is because we have a high bed. When I sat it was in my recliner and I slept on my side the first night. Was walking four blocks the next day. I walked a lot around my house and yard. Felt a little yucky but nothing major. Good luck to you.:)

thanks for the reply. I have been reading some of the things posted and am starting to get nervous. You have eased my mind somewhat!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
