I turned 50 and am 100 plus pounds lighter! I was banded 3 years ago and although the journey has been rough at times I have no regrets . I have more energy am just more comfortable than I ever imagined. I am struggling a little right now with food choices but am confident that it will pass and I will continue my success!

I'm 47 and have over 100 pounds to lose. It is good to hear you have achieved that. I have been somewhat concerned about my age and how slow my metabolism might be because of my age. I have been worried I would not be able to achieve a 100 pound loss. So hearing that you have is promising. Do you think age has had anything to do with how fast or slow you lost? Did you think you had to exercise more than a younger person might of had to? Or did you have to eat fewer calories for your age compared to someone say around 25 or 30? Sorry for so many questions, just curious. Congratulations by the way. and Happy B-Day.

Hey Steph...I'm going to be 55 next month and want to lose around 120 lbs. I've lost 73 already and have done no exercise at all because of the severe arthritis. I go into the pool three days a week but it's to try to move and strengthen the knee, not to burn calories. I've no idea why I'm so successful...I'm not doing anything different than anyone else who's following the rules. I thought the same thing as you....how long would it take to lose the weight at my age and without exercising. I'm just grateful that it has come off so quickly...I need a full knee replacement and wasn't able to have the surgery till I lost a significant amount of weight. I met that goal a couple of weeks ago and will have the surgery in the fall I hope. How are you doing? I see from your ticker that you are down 18 lbs. That's pretty good considering you had surgery fairly recently.

I am doing good thanks for asking. Thanks for the comment on my weight, they said at the doc's office I was doing real well too, but I guess I've been hard on myself. I should have lost more, stuff like that. I've just learned how to recognize satiety so that should help me out some too. I feel pretty good right now, thanks

Understanding satiety I think is the key. If I'm doing anything right, it's that. And your weight loss is absolutely wonderful. Too many people are too hard on themselves or have unrealistic expectations. All that does is set us up for failure.

I didn't really exercise much at all until I had lost about 70 pounds / I just didn't have the energy! I did watch my calories very closely for the first couple of years; tried to stay between 800 & 1000 calories per day! I didn't really attribute it to age I was just so determined and once I got started I was pretty consumed by it!

I wish you all success and happiness!

Wow Debbie. I just saw this post because you 'liked' it. I forgot that in July, I was still thinking knees and not hips. I hadn't seen the surgeon yet. Reminds us how our lives twist and turn and how much we really don't control it. I guess the good part is that I had said I was hoping to lose about 120 lbs. and I was able to at least accomplish that part of it. Oh, and now when I go to the pool, instead of just splashing around, I'm taking Water exercise classes...something I'd never have been able to do before the hip replacements. Thanks for letting me see this.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
