Here's my take on it. We've failed at every other weight loss attempt and that's why we're taking the step of WLS. I suspect you fear that you will fail this as well. Why can't we do it on our own? Because we are addicted to food and turn to it for all or many of our emotional needs. We do not eat to live, we live to eat. For many of us, the band is the tool that we need to help us make the right choices and keep to the band size protions.

This is not the easy way out so don't think you've already failed because you can't do it on your own. Plenty of people screw this up to by not eating smart so don't think of this as the easy way out...it isn't.

As far as making the right choice, if you are really not sure about doing this than don't. You may not be ready. Most folks are scared as you are, but are also ready to commit to this new lifestyle. Do some soul searching and decide if you are just nervous or if you really are not ready to do this. Then make your decision based on what your heart is telling you.

Good luck whatever the future holds for you.

I had doubts as well but mainly because I was starting this journey during the Christmas season. My pre-op was started on 12/14/12 and my surgery date was 12/28/12. I had the attitude that it was now or never. I didn't want "never" to be an option so I went for it. I was scared too but everything went well and I feel I made the right decision. Good luck to you!

Everyone get's the jitters beforehand....it's like a marriage where you know it's the right thing to do but the commitment of the road ahead may seem terrifying. I too went back and forth, but always reminding myself that it was better to do it and cross the rough bridges, then to chicken out and just be fat and miserable. I'm not 4.5 months out and lost 50 pounds and my life is already totally different. Do it for yourself!

Good Luck =)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
