What does "stuck" mean?

Recommended Posts

I read of people saying things get stuck. I am envisioning choking on food that won't go into the pouch.

Stuck means a piece of food won't pass through the stoma between the pouch and the rest of your stomach. It doesn't actually cut of your air supply as if you are choking, but it can be painful. This shouldn't happen frequently...if it does, there's a problem-either with your eating habits or with the band being too tight.

Stuck means that the food that you ate will not go through the opening in your stomach where the lap band is. . Either you ate too fast, too much, or it was dry and didn't chew well. What normally happens when that happens with me is that I throw it up. It's not fun, but it makes the pain go away really quick. So Eat slow, make sure that it is to really well. And don't eat anything that you like the bread consistency. They usually get stuck. But after a while you will know what foods to stay away from. Good luck! If you have any questions let me know how long have you been banded.

For many of us it's having too much food in our pouch due to eating too fast and not chewing adequately. The food consistency makes it difficult to pass through the stoma into the lower stomach. This can cause food to back up into your esophagus to the point that you begin to slime* and maybe even PB*.

*Slime-When your body secretes a lot of mucus/saliva in your esophagus to aid food to pass through. We call it sliming when we regurgitate some of this up and spit it out.

*PB-Productive burp is when we can mildly regurgitate the food stuck in our esophagus or pouch and spit it out. Great relief bonus.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
