Recommended Posts

I am not yet banded but i was wondering when you have your band unfilled like for pregnancy and such can you eat normal again. Like eating bread and carbonation?

Hi I have had my band empty for over a year. I am going back in 3 weeks to get some fill. At the moment I can eat anything and drink anything. I also have put on 25kg. Hope this helps.

I havent had a fill in almost 2 years and I eat everything. Some foods I still have trouble, mostly when I eat too fast, but for the most part I eat what I want. You will learn to live with your band and not depend on it anymore.

For most people being completely unfilled means being able to eat the same way as pre-band. For a small group though, they still experience some restriction with an empty band.

My band is currently unfilled. If you don't want to gain weight, you must continue to follow the Bandster diet, limit your portions to what the diet allows, and continue to follow the dietary restrictions, along with getting in reasonable amounts of exercise.

The risk of erosion from carbonation would continue even with an unfilled band.

Just because your band is unfilled does not mean that you allow yourself to return to your previous lifestyle with eating.

I have quite a lot of restriction even with my band unfilled. I don't want to gain weight, so I continue to be compliant with eating like I should. I am unable to tolerate the same list of foods I was before my band was unfilled.

Thanks for your input. My major reason for getting healthy is for my two kids and so we can add to our family with me being healthy. Can anyone chew like normal with the band unfilled or do you still have tp chew, chew, chew?

This is interesting......

Where might I be able to find this info? Some study or medical journal? Could you point me to a link about this? I have never heard Carbon dioxide gas can cause erosion. Thanks, David

The information was given to me pre op by my surgeon and medical staff.

I don't tend to question the medical opinion given to me by my doctors.

Perhaps your physician has a different opinion. That's not unusual on this forum.

I have an empty band and drink fizzy drinks a lot and never had a problem. The drink just flows through. I am not doubting your Dr advice. Maybe he has his reasons and opinions. It's better for your health to stay off fizzy drinks.

I've never not been able to eat anything during my band life. It is harder for me to eat thicker breads and dense foods, but at no point did I have to eliminate entire groups.

As with varying drs, rules on carbonation, etc are different- my surgeon and nutritionist said I could drink carbonated beverages, although I dont do it often because I end up burping a lot.

I still have to chew chew chew, especially when eating breads, eggs, or any of the food they warn us about. Chewing is a way of life now and when I dont chew properly (even after 4 years), the food comes up. I've learned my body/stomach now, so I can tell when I dont feel good. The burps are a way of life too...lol

No more lady like...lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
