disgusted with myself... I over-ate today

Recommended Posts

I was banded on June 20... I have done great up until yesterday and today... I have lost 26 lbs. But I all the sudden don't feel any restriction. (Going for a fill tomorrow) I started my monthly "time" and on the past this was the harsest time for me with eating... and what do ya know... I screwed up yesterday and today and ate things I shouldn't eat and more than I meed to also. Right now I feel like crap physically and emotionally! ! My mental state about food has not been fully healed evem though I had the band and it won the oast two days... I am now scared I have messed something up!!! :((( so sad and sick!

If I could offer a word of encouragement/advice for you?

You're very new at this still. It's ok to make mistakes! We're human after all....and we didn't get to needing surgery because we ate correctly all the time.

What's most important now is to eat those things/types of foods that have been ok'd by your surgical team...liquids/mushies/soft foods...depending on the stage of your post op diet. Eating more of the ok'd foods if you feel you must, would be better than progressing to "off limit" foods. Theres a reason you were asked to avoid certain types of foods...

You probably didn't have much, if any, saline added to your band during surgery. So you are probably approaching or in whats referred to as bandster hell on here. That period of time after surgery but BEFORE the band does it's part. It's all on you right now....another diet until you reach what's referred to as the GREEN ZONE. Most everyone experienced that bandster hell, when we were wondering what have I done, why am I so hungry, etc. It will pass, given correct adjustments after your body has had a chance to recover from surgery.

It takes some longer than others to reach that level of restriction....maybe NO fills (very unusual for the band by itself) some may take several, but you can get there....just never, ever give up!

Hang in there!

No, you have not screwed up. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself and start anew. Just don't fall into a pattern and say well I already screwed up so I'll continue to screw up! The answer is because of your monthly your mind is playing tricks on you. I used to feel it was it was an excuse to eat the wrong foods. I would keep gaining weight and keep using excuses to compensate for the wrong I had done. It's up to you to forgive yourself and say today is a new day. I'm starting fresh and today I'm going to do the right thing. Good luck on your journey!

I'm with Catfish on all counts. Please do NOT beat yourself up for this. None of us are perfect! Pick yourself up, dust yourself off.....and move on.

As far as your "mental state healing about food", I'm not clear on what you're thinking about that. If you're thinking that the surgery will heal your relationship with food, and your emotional compulsion to eat, it won't. That is the most difficult part about WLS; it does nothing to your brain. We all have to work on our issues with food. The band helps a great deal with hunger, but it does nothing on our brain. Band or no band, there is a lot of work to do in our relationship with food.

Please......stop beating yourself up. It will do you more harm than good.

Good luck :)

Catfish is so right... don't stress about it.. Just get back to it.. we have all had weak moments and that is why we have had weight issues.. just remember you now have a tool to help you through it.

read posts on here and feel free to ask questions.. We are here and have had the same problems...

Yes tomorrow is a new day sometimes we can be our own worse enemy but Im glad you realize we're you moment of weakness is and now can move on from it I completely understand how that time of the month can play with our emotion cravings and even play head games it a hard time for most women so next month be prepare with healthy foods that may help satisfied the cravings or better yet learn so tricks such as distracting yourself when a craving or emotion hits this is a lifetime battle you and I didn't learn our unsuccessful eating patterns overnight and we wont learn how to correct them overnight either. Best of luck and keep moving forward

Wonderful responses from catfish and the others. I think the emotional eating component is the hardest thing to deal with as far as the band is concerned. Because you are physically unable to eat away your emotions you're forced to face a lot of demons, and it's HARD. The beauty of it all though is that as you grow into a new person physically you will also be growing emotionally, and it's a wonderful thing. I'm 2.5 years out and I still struggle sometimes with that urge to eat away my feelings but have been able to learn so much about myself because I've finally had to confront the things in my life that were keeping me overweight. This is a lifelong journey and we all stumble along the way. Congratulate yourself on taking the first step, and remember it DOES get better! :)

The swelling has gone down from the surgery that's why it seems like you can eat like you use to. Once you get your fill you should be fine. I messed up once or twice but it happens when it is time for your fills that's why you have to stay on top of getting them.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You took a couple of weeks to over eat. I did so three days post op. Yes, I learned the hard way. Its a lesson I don't have to learn again. Unfortunately, my monthly is scheduled to come on in the next day or so. In my past, I am usually a bottomless pit a week before my monthly. Constantly hungry and to be honest no idea why. During my monthly, I want little to nothing to eat. What have I learned so far: it will take some time to curb your former eating habits. Good thing about having the band is that you get the indicators of wrong decisions pretty quickly. So don't be so hard on yourself. We all make mistakes. Emotionally, You have always been and will always be a beautiful spirit and a good person....that's what you should tell yourself everyday. Love you as you are now, and you will love you through the good and challenging moments later. If ever you need a good laugh, you can always ask me what genius (aka crazy) thing have I done today. Im usually good for a laugh.

We are band twins. I was also banded june 20th. Me and you seem to be on the same hunger schedule. I have lost 27 pds and the past two days I would eat and 2 hours later I am hungry. It sucks I even got in 100grams of Protein (still hungry). Ate over my 1,000 calories limit. Talked to the doc today she said its normal happens to everyone and thats why I havent lost weight int he past 2 weeks. I have a fill in 2 weeks if my stitches are healed by then. Wish you the best of luck. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
