Items needed after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I know this has been asked before.

I've looked and can't find a list.

So of all of you post-op veterans can help me put my list together I would be forever grateful.

What were some of the things you had on hand and what was something you wished you had?

food items and other things (pillow, heating pad ect.)

My date is coming up and I am trying to get organized.

Thanks in advance.

Make sure not to forget a heating pad, I had forgot to buy one and had to have someone bring me one the day of my surgery. It was the best thing I had that and gas x. That is all I needed. Good luck with getting banded it is the best choice I made!

i have been LIVING with ice packs on my incisions - helps a ton. also - if you are large chested, having a sports bra has been a life saver for me - you have to make sure the band doesn't press on any incisions, but without it one of my breasts was pressing on an incision and causing discomfort. i'm also recommending stool softener. my first BM post op was a nightmare.

I have been making a list so this is very helpful. I don't have a date yet so it's all preliminary, but I want to feel prepared. In my notebook I have questions, one being whether its possible to fill prescriptions ahead of time so there won't be any waiting at a drug store on the way home from the hospital.

The only script I had was a narcotic pain killer and I doubt they'd fill something like that in advance - but it's worth asking. Everything else has been OTC for me.

Besides everything else on your list I brought a journal to write in. Also I was able to fill my prescription for lortab elixir for the pain in advance .

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
