long story need opinions

Recommended Posts

ok so long story ill try to make it as short as possible.... so last month here in ct I was chosen to do a research study they pretend to take your fill out one day and the next they do take your fill out or vice versa and they don't tell you which day they are doing what and then they monitor your brain activity.. I could completely tell the difference because you eat lunch when you are there anyways I got my fill taken out the second day and they went to put the Fluid back in and I couldn't even get Water down so the dr took out 1.5 cc and I felt like my band was completely empty even though it wasnt with just that taken out... 1 week after which was a little over 3 weeks ago I had 1cc put back in and ive really been struggling since... ive had days when I feel like I can eat anything and everything that I want (not that I am but im just describing how I feel) and then 2 days later I cant even get my morning coffee down... im not loosing any weight and those days that I cant get anything down feel like ive gone a lifetime without food... anyone have any opinions on what to do? should I get some fluid removed(I really don't want to because im not loosing now and im afraid ill gain but if I have to then I have to!) does it sound like my band has slipped? should I be worried? any opinions or help on what to do I would appreciate! Thanks in advance!

I agree with Mis.

Is the study over? Seems like a bit of a roller coaster ride to put your self through. Just my opinion, but once your band issue is straightened out, I would leave it alone.

the study is over that's the only reason I messed with the band I never thought I would have to deal with this after... and I will never do it again!

Wait, let me get this straight, were you having any issues with the band to begin with? Or, did you just voluntarily sign up for this study? We're you feeling restriction before this study? I'm all for research on the lapband but if I was doing OK with the band I guess I wouldn't want to be a part of this study.

Make sure and tell your surgeon every detail about how you felt before and after and explain what's happening now. I hope you don't have to pay for future fills if you volunteered for this study. Good luck and I hope everything turns out OK!

I was not having issues with the band before! it was something the surgeon had asked me to do because of how successful I was with the band...they are trying to figure out why successful people with the band are successful so that they can have a better understanding of how to help those who aren't so successful and yes my last fill was covered by them! thanks!

I'm curious as to what the POINT of the study was? For me personally after a fill I didn't always feel a lasting fullness until I was closer to 7 cc in a 14 cc band. ( hope that makes sense?)and then after a fill my feeling of fullness wasn't until days after the fill and lasted for weeks until the next fill, hence the reason for another fill. Were they trying to see if the brain changes were physical or psychological? Like others have mentioned you need to relay this information to your doctor, I'd read numerous posts that other banders have had these same issues after small un-fills and then experiencing a re-fill.

As far as a Slip, unless your having issues swallowing, vomiting, regurge or unable to eat (classic symptoms) I wouldn't get overly concerned at this point......Keep us posted please and good luck!

they were trying to see the psychological difference... I was in a mri machine for 5 hrs a day for 2 days... and I do understand what your saying about the band I went through the same thing but I was in my green zone before the study

ok so I just spoke to the nurse on the phone I have a appt with my surgeons aprn nxt Monday and the nurse said to just eat mushies and don't drink anything to hot or cold after I eat just have it be room temp?... she said after having the Fluid out and then in and then out and back in it can agitate the stomach so stick to mushies for a few days and if things don't get better within the nxt few days call and they will get me in earlier...I did however do that for 4 days after I had the last fill so I would imagine it would've had some time to heal no? I will do what im told and hopefully itll work itself out! I will keep you guys updated!

Jen, let me say thanks for doing that study! I think there are a lot of things that are still unknown about the band and why it works for some people and yet not for others.

Part of the reason is that I think obesity is not just a physical issue it is a mental and emotional one as well.

I am fairly new to the band, but I can tell there are days when it is not just the physical feeling of having the band. There are aspects to the way it affects the nervous system both the central nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system or the reactive emotional nervous system.

Finding that delicate balance for each of us is not an easy task. Everyone's "green zone" is as different and diverse as each one of us and seems to change as we do.

So what worked for you before the study may have shifted a bit, and needs a little tailoring till you find that balance again. You're doing amazing and thanks again for taking the time and the challenge of that study to help all the rest of us learn more about the band and how it works.

Even just backing your Fluid out to have it checked and then putting it back in will cause swelling as if you'd had fluid added. Trust me, I made the mistake once of having my fluid checked AND getting a fill on the same day. BIG MISTAKE. This isn't your fault and frankly sounds a little reckless on the part of your doctor. Once someone is in the green zone you should NEVER mess with their fluid. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! I hope you were compensated monetarily for your participation and trouble! Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
