Rice?? Why not?

Recommended Posts

So I remember something about not eating rice with the band but can't remember why (other than the carb content). Isn't there another reason why we shouldn't eat rice?

I eat rice all the time. I usually have brown or whole grain with brown. I buy the small pre-made ones that you nuke for 1 minute. They are good and convenient. My dietitian told me I have no restrictions to any foods, just pick properly.

I have Chinese food about once a week. Ask your dietitian about the rice. Did you get a book on foods/diet when you had the surgery? I was given a huge book to follow from start to finish.

My nut said rice, Pasta, bread, could swell in the pouch and stretch it so limit it. But she said I can eat it if must.

I couldn't eat white rice before being banded because it would clump up in my chest area (for lack of a better description) but some brown rice pilafs I try sparingly because I don't like the feeling I get with the white rice. I love rice btw, I grew up having rice 3 to 4 times a week so I would love to eat rice again, I'm just afraid to.

I was told it could get stuck in the band and cause slippage.

You have to learn for yourself, what works and what does not.....everyone has different tolerances, based upon restriction.

I avoid rice, don't go near it....as well as any flour products such as bread, donuts, etc. Also melted cheese...to name just a few. There are other foods I have learned to stay away from also....but you have to learn for yourself as you get closer to the Green Zone.

If you have recently been banded, then there is also a lot of info that will not make any sense.

I agree! My NUT says you should eat what you love, make it healthy and satisfying. I too use the brown rice in the small cup to microwave. I eat 1/4 cup with black Beans mixed in it! It is not sticky or clumpy.

I eat rice regularly with no problem.

But I don't restrict/count carbs either.

I've noticed you mention this comment about you not counting or restricting carbs. I find that interesting because I've gone from a complete carb-aholic to being almost afraid of them because of so many comments on this site. Maybe you've been asked this before (and if so I apologize) but with your success would you mind posting a few "typical" meal days for you and if there are any differences now than when you were 5-6 months post op. Thanks.

Don't forget that your body needs carbs, just good ones. I just avoid the white flour and sugar (as much as possible). My NUT wants you to eat good carbs, that is one of your Fiber sources too. Don't be afraid, just be cautious. I did the same thing in the beginning, I avoided all carbs and my NUT said to quit that!

I eat rice with no problem. Though there's something about Jasmin rice in Indian food that hurts. Maybe it's drier?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
