bad news/good news

Recommended Posts

Well...as many of you know, I have severe arthritis in my right knee. It was a co-morbidity and made it that much easier to get approved by the insurance company. I have alot of pain still even after losing more than 70 lbs. so I had an MRI done and was told that the damage is too severe for any additional shots or medicinal interventions. The doctor is recommending a knee replacement. That's the bad news.

The good news is that I've lost enough weight to have the surgery...which was the reason I did this to begin with. I was told nearly a year ago that at the weight I was, surgery would not be successful. I was banded in January with the hope that I could go ahead with the surgery in a year but I've done so well with the weight loss that I'm looking at surgery at the end of the summer or early fall. Not happy about having surgery but am so hopeful that the surgery will be successful and I'll be able to walk without pain again. .

Ugh I'm so sorry you have to go through this, but that's way awesome that you can now safely have the surgery because you've lost so much weight.

My mom had both her knees replaced. The first one she was only 41 and the second she was 43. The recovery was very hard but she'll tell you it was SO worth it. She is now 60 years old and still doing great. She still has no pain in her knees, walks just fine, and overall enjoys her mobility. She moves lightyears better at 60 than she did at 40 because of her "new knees".

I'll definitely keep you in my prayers!

Thanks so much Missy. I'm glad you told me about your mom. I'm hoping to be as successful as she is.

Well, sorry that you have to have surgery but I'm happy for you that you have lost enough weight to have the surgery. I am a nurse and have taken care of alot of post knee replacement patients. Most of them, when I talk to them several months after their surgery, say they can't believe how much better their knees feel and that they had no idea how much pain they had presurgery. Most say they would do it again in a heartbeat! Here's to better mobility! Good Luck!

Thanks pink. I appreciate your professional input. I'm in terrible pain all the time and am OK with going through this surgery if I can come out the other side being able to walk without the cane. If it works, my sister and I head to Paris for a vacation. I've wanted to go for some years now but was always stopped because I have such limited mobility.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
