Okay so I had my first "stuck" episode last night. Scared me so bad... But I did a full flown vomiting episode 30 seconds after. I threw up violently. I thought after a stuck episode it just comes back up. Last night scared me and this morning I am sore from throwing up. Yesterday I received my 2nd fill I have 5.5cc in a 10cc band. I was on full liquids yesterday and did a very stupid thing and attempted to eat a half a spoon of rice... I will NEVER do that again. Now I am afraid to eat food... I will take it easy toay with liquids and then I will progress to mushy food... wow this band has alot in store for me... the good news.. down 19 lbs.

I think a lot of people try to candy coat vomiting as, it was just a pb! Like everyone does that all the time. For me, vomiting and pb are pretty much the same thing. I never just lightly burp and delicately bring up a few bites that can easily be tucked away in a napkin. So to me, PB = Vomit. That being said, either way, take it easy after an episode because it can cause swelling. You're doing the right thing there. Anytime I would have an episode I would immediately make my next meal a full liquid and the next one a mushie and then slowly go back to regular foods. Sometimes I would also take some liquid motrin to help with the swelling. I know some people are okay with throwing up once a week, a day, or even several times a day. Personally, I don't want to throw up once a year if I can help it! Vomiting is a normal part of the learning curve with the band but with proper care and attention it can be avoided almost completely eventually. Good luck!

yeah i know of some people who jokingly it call it "bandulemia" as if getting stuck is a joke or slippage is a minor inconvenience. ::shaking head:: granted while every surgeon/doctor is different, mine recommends liquids after getting stuck to help calm the irritation from throwing up. so i'd agree with guy about liquids and then mushies to progress back to solids, fill or not.

edit: good progress though :) congrats

With no disrespect to previous posters, PBing and vomiting are not even close the the same thing. The only similarity is the fact food comes back up with both but process is very different.

When you PB, you essentially just burp the stuck food back up. There is no force and there is no retching or stomach spasming. It's not pleasant but it's not dangerous, either.

When you vomit, your stomach contracts and spasms forcing the food back up. That is when you get all the retching and violence.

Vomiting is very dangerous with the band. It's never normal and should be avoided at all costs because it's the leading cause of slips.

Then in 4 1/2 years I've never PB'd like a butterfly.

Then in 4 1/2 years I've never PB'd like a butterfly.

I've only PB'd once in the 18 months since being banded. It was totally gross.

Unfortunately, I've vomited a couple times. Once when I had a strangulated hernia and once when my gallbladder went this past spring. The weird thing is, apparently I can't "correctly vomit" anymore since getting the band. Both times I violently retched and felt my stomach contract and try to force the food up- but it couldn't get back up through the band. It was awful and scared the cr@p out of me. I was so afraid I'd hurt myself or caused a slip.

I'm not sure I've ever vomited from 'below my band' and the thought of that scares me like if I get a stomach bug or something. When I throw it it's from my pouch and it's very uncomfortable. After I'm done though I usually do a big burp and fill a ton of relief. However, I'm instantly swollen after the episode.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
