Shelley Relayson 13 Posted July 11, 2013 Hi. I have my surgery scheduled for next week. I was wondering how long after surgery do you think it would be ok to take a long road trip?
rmalikone 108 Posted July 11, 2013 Today is day 4 post-op and just drove about 100 miles.
GuyMontag 1,264 Posted July 11, 2013 To be on the safe side I'd wait about two weeks. Honestly though, being upright is the most comfortable position to be in with the band so sitting in a car or a plane probably wouldn't be too big of a deal.
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! 12,703 Posted July 11, 2013 Ask your doctor to be safe. The biggest reason doctors advise against long car trips or plane rides immediately after surgery is due to the risk of blood clots.
Good4me1313 54 Posted July 11, 2013 Yes, totally agree with talking to your doctor. I would imagine a lot would depend on how long a trip you take, size of the vehicle (bigger means you could stretch out some maybe), how your overall health is and HOW YOU FEEL. When you do go, have FUN!
heather316 72 Posted July 11, 2013 I took a 4 hour bus trip on postop day 8 and it was fine.
Shelley Relayson 13 Posted July 11, 2013 Thanks everyone. I'll talk to the doc and see how i feel. I think if I make frequent stops, I will be ok. We shall see soon! So excited!!
Cwalband 215 Posted July 11, 2013 I love traveling! It is a passion of mine. I did ask the doctor how long I should wait before any large trip and he said about 2 weeks or until I start feeling better. I'm traveling all the time so he did have me get DVT bands, which help stimulate blood flow while sitting for long periods and for plane rides. My insurance covered them %100, so that was nice. Like everyone else I'd ask just to make sure, but to where ever you are headed I hope you have a safe and more importantly FUN trip! Best wishes.
