will adding protein to my diet before the band hurt me?

Recommended Posts

I talked to my doctor today and we are working toward lap band surgery. In the meantime she wants me to start tracking my calories and start weight watches and use an app like lose it. she also said it would help to start cutting out some things i wont be able to have once I am banded and trying some new things that I will need such as Protein Shakes. I am tracking my calories, fat, Fiber, and Protein. I have enough calories to add a Protein Drink but that would put my protein intake today at 138 g. is that bad for me? Will it make me gain weight even though I am within calories for the day?

My doctor suggested to me to take in 60g of Protein a day and to keep each meal about 300 cals each leaving 300 cals for Snacks. what helped me lose the weight was planning my meals out on microsoft word. and every friday I would go get the items on my list and break down my meats in a freezer bag. Its a hassle to always cook, but at least you know what you are getting. anyhow, adding protein will not make you gain weight, it will make you feel fuller longer. just remember to eat your protein first. substituting Protein Shakes for a meal will not hurt you either.

oh btw my fitness pal is a great app for tracking food. exercise, and Water intake. you can also add friends too. I tend to look at what some of my friends eat so i can compare it and get more variety to my food choices. :)

It's great that you are starting to change your lifestyle and eat like a bandster. The only advise I have is eat your Protein, don't drink it. Yes you will have to do Protein shakes during the pre & post diets and after fills, but not on a daily bases.

Eating a high protein diet is healthy as log as you are also getting your veggies in.

FYI - Mis73 uses the app Lose it & really likes it.

Good luck to you!

I use Lose It and I've used it for 18 months. I absolutely love it, it's like my "food bible".

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
