Post op care not great.... Have I made a mistake?

Recommended Posts

Ok, maybe I am freaking myself out. I was banded on the 29th. The doc was great however I am finding that my post op care is lacking. I was not given allot of info regarding what to eat after the surgery. Clear Liquids for two days then liquids for two weeks however what I was told varies allot from what I have read here. For liquids I was told I could do shakes, Soups (as long as they were well blended), broth, Jello, and yoghurt. I have stuck to it religiously however I am afraid since it is so different than everyone elses that it could cause a band slip? I don't feel anything when I eat. Just like it was before I got banded. I have called my aftercare number 3 times. They finally set me up with a chat with the dietitan for today. I am waiting for the call. Was told to eat til I felt full by the doc but on forums people are saying only 2 ounces at a time? Freaking out?

There are huge variances in post op instructions. Do what your doctor tells you to do. In this time just after your op, you're healing and dieting (as in restricting your intake) may not be what your doctor wants you to do. My dr did not expect me to be on a diet following my operation.

Also for my first op, I went through a very quick progression from liquids to mushies to solids - like I said, every doctor is different.

Your post-op diet is similar to most and not unusual at all. You may not feel the band doing it's job till you get several fills and that may take a few months. Good idea to speak to your dietician, they're great resources for finding the foods that give you satiety and nutrition.

Your post-op diet is pretty much the same exact as mine was. I was on clear liquids for two days following surgery, then switched to full liquids for the next 12 days. After that, mushy foods for 10 days & so on. I was told to take small sips, while finding my comfort level. The two ounce cup thing is a tool for some, to keep them from gulping & going too fast. In time, you will find your own comfort level with this.

Amberley - PLEASE follow the instructions given to you by your doctor, and don't get too hung up on what you read others are doing on this site. This is a wonderful place for support and interaction with others who are banded, but the number one expert on all issues with your surgery, is your doctor. Nothing you've mentioned sounds off the mark. If your doctor told you that you could resume normal eating the day after surgery (solids including steak), I might lift an eyebrow. But it sounds like you're right on track.

As mentioned above, you will read so many variables in each doctor's post-op (and pre-op) instructions; it can make your head spin. Clearly, there isn’t one single template for lap band aftercare, but everyone seems to do perfectly fine…..as long as they follow their specific instructions.

Good luck - you will do fine! :)

Hi.

I had my surgery on the 9th of August. Helping well and just started purée food.

I get a very sharp pain in my right side when I bed over or when I get up out of a chair.

Is this normal?

Thanks

Pauline

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
