Do people treat you differently?

Recommended Posts

I found quite a difference in how people treated me although I am not sure if some of that was coming from me too. When I was heavy I didn't want to be noticed. Dressed very plain, was very quiet when dealing with people in stores. So looking back it is not surprise that I was ignored much of the time. Being thin, I am much more open, friendly and talkative with strangers in stores and in general meet people much more easily.

In my personal life, co-workers treated me much the same except for many many comments and questions. Some very personal asking if I was sick, and how much I weighed (personal to me anyhow as I would not ask people those things). I decided to take a year off of work and there are tons of rumours now about me being off to have plastic surgery etc. LOL. I would but that was not why I took time off. People will always gossip and talk regardless.

One of the best things I have done in the past couple of months is move to a small island with my family and I love the feeling of meeting new people who I have no history with. They don't talk to me about my weight at all. I am simply me. The me that was always there fat and thin.

In general, I find that the biggest difference is that people are much friendlier to me as a thin person but again, some of that might be attributable to how I treat others too and how I carry myself.

...and this all seriously pisses me off. I'm the same person' date=' with the same personality, and the same worth as I was when I was 200 pounds heavier. The only difference is now my packaging is a bit different.

Fat discrimination is alive and well, trust me.[/quote']

Amen, sister!

The look I hate the most is when you're waiting to board a plane and everyone's looking at you thinking "dear Lord please don't let him sit by me".

I actually once boarded a plane and as I made my way down the aisle I could see a guy craning his neck to see who was coming along. When I sat down next to him, the guy actually looked over all flirtatiously and said 'oh I'm so glad it was you, I was worried it would be someone fat'. I just looked him in the eye and said, 'well aren't you a charmer? I was fat all my life, and I got get thin, but YOU won't ever be able to change that ugly mug of yours.'.

Suffice to say it was a VERY awkward plane ride for that a-hole.

Do you find people, in general, treat you differently as a lean person vs. when you were heavy?

i was more insecure the bigger i was...i let everything and everyone get to me...affect my emotions..affect my day....now that i have lost weight, self confidence has come back...little by little...i carry myself different..i feel different..i am different..before i was the jolly super morbid obese lady, today i am just virginia...what you see is who i am and boy it is sure nice to see/be her again.....hub seems to like seeing me again too...losing weight has me made me treat myself better.....because i deserve it...

Actually no. I am just receiving so many compliments and stares which are more than I'm used to. But no, I'm still treated the same.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
