Bloated and Very Uncomfortable

Recommended Posts

I was banded on June 24, a little over a week ago. I am currently able to have Protein Shakes and thick pureed Soups. All the pain from the gas pumped in during surgery seems to have gone away, but I have now developed a new gas problem! Every time I drink a shake or eat a little Soup, my stomach fills up with air and becomes distended and full. I can only drink a little because I feel so full and uncomfortable. This continues all day long, making eating and drinking, and just life in general, miserable. It only seems to go away overnight when I am completely empty and then the pain and fullness returns as soon as I drink my first shake. I do not have lactose intolerance. I have tried drinking/eating slowly and that did not help. I am fairly desperate...is this something that will continue? I am so distended, it is uncomfortable to wear fitted clothing and with the bloat and gas in my stomach and lower intestines, I am miserable!!!! What the heck is going on? Does anyone else have this reaction to eating or drinking?

Post surgery you can develop intolerance to dairy. Also if you are putting things in the blender this can pump them full of air making you feel bloated and gassy. Try not blending things first. If that doesn't work try switching out to Silk instead of milk for about a week and maybe not eat cream soup...just a thought.

I feel the same way, well, I don't feel full when I drink, I am still on liquid diet but it helped me to make my Protein Shake in the shaking cup instead of the blender. My porblem is that when I drink I get some air in and it gets ready to get out trought burping but I can not burp, I think it has something to do with the surgery or with the Hietal Hernia that they fixed during surgery.

I don't know but it is uncomfortable because I have to walk a lot in order for the gas to move arround. Hope it gets better.

Same here I was so bloated and could barely get in any liquids. It lasted for about 3 weeks. I only was able to force down my Protein drinks and it was so uncomfortable. I wish you well. This to shall pass :P. Maybe try some gas-x.

Sorry for your discomfort...

After three weeks post op I was still getting very bloated and it was painful.

I figured out I am so use to drinking a large amount of liquids at one time, I had to try

to remember to drink only one drink at a time. I cant just down 3 or 4 ounces at a time without

the gas and bloat to return. I still get impatient..

I hope this helps...

I also read on someones comment that anything they hurt they do the

"downward facing dog" yoga pose.... I have tried it and it does give relief sometimes!

I think you are expecting too much for a week out of surgery... patience is needed while you heal.. I had gas, bloated feelings and pain in my shoulder for weeks.. so it's normal... I used a heating pad for my shoulder.. did as much walking as I could to help with the gas.. You can't drink too much at a time during this period... I was lucky to get 1/2 of a Protein Drink down at that stage... it does get better so don't get discouraged... rest and drink as much Water as you can...

If I remember correctly it took a good month for all my bloating to go away and in that time no matter what I drank or ate made me feel as if I had sat down to a banquet. Give it time and everything will go down and you will start to feel normal again with no bloating. For some it resolves much quicker than others but it will get better.

Thanks so much for all the kind responses. I am continuing to have this painful fullness, but I have hope now that it will eventually go away!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
