Sorry about this gross question...

Recommended Posts

I started my pre op diet yesterday. 2 meals are Protein Shakes, 1 meal is 6-8 oz lean meat, 1 cup green veggies and 1 cup fruit (no banana). I have spent most of today on the toilette. Will this last the entire 3 weeks pre op? Also any advice for what to have in the house post op, not just food wise but anything that can help?

Thanks,

Holly

I didn't have a pre op diet, so I can't help you there, other than report to surgeons office whats going on.

Post op, I did have diarrhea and was able to take chewable Imodium, per Dr.

I've noticed everyone handles this different, some constipated & some diarrhea.

I suggest Chapstick to take to surgical center, wake up with really dry lips. Also heating pad for post op.

Good luck!

I don't have that problem. I'm on day 4 of my pre-op diet.

Don't do Metamucil! It is an osmotic laxative. You will have even worse diarrhea and that Johnny Cash song ring of fire will have all new meaning to you. Are you using milk in your shakes? maybe it is an uncovered lactose intolerance?

@Helli, its the Protein shakes going right thru you. Chances are ur using Water instead of milk bc your most likely on an 800-1000 cal diet. Those symptoms will change. Its a cleanse of your insides. I'm day 8 of pre op & feeling okay. Hang in there!

Thank you for that info. Makes sense back in my slimfast days the same thing would happen.

I had exactly the same pre-op diet and I did not have diarrhea but I did have the headache from hell on days 2-4--take tylenol. This is a tough diet. I would have a shake for Breakfast and lunch, one cup of fruit (an apple for example) mid afternoon, and then the Protein and veggie for dinner. Post-op: get lots of different Clear Liquids as some will make you gag after awhile (get diet juice, Water, broth, and bouillion, SF Jello, and SF popsicles). Also get gas-x, a heating pad, and a small firm pillow to hold against your incisions in the beginning, whenever needed (like coughing or in my case, merely breathing). Make sure your doc gives you pain meds and nausea meds. Good luck! We will be here when you are on the other side so we can help/commiserate with you then! You will do great!

I have to agree with Beanie80. NO METAMUCIL!! I'm a nurse, who currently specializes in Geriatric care. That's what I give people who have Constipation issues! If someone has diarrhea, already, it is not a good thing to take! Trust me on this one.

I am day 7 pre op diet and am mostly Protein Shakes plus .5 cup of fruit, veg and starch. I have been mixing my veg serving (using spinach) into my Protein smoothies (just the powder, Water, and ice) and I think the ruffage has helped keep me regular.

I am on day 8 pre op diet . I am having 3 Protein Drinks, using a lemonade flavor I bought at bariatric choice.com. I also can have 1 lean cuisine a day until days 12 &13 then just liquids. I have lost 8 pounds so far, hoping for at least 12. My surgery has been moved up a day due to having to change hospital because of insurance coverage! UGH! No problems with stools yet, hope it stays like that! Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
