Extreme weight loss is the cause of Hair loss, not a particular weight loss surgery. So yes, there's hair loss. There are ways to try and prevent it as much as possible such as Vitamins, Biotin, and high Protein intake, but hair loss is the body's natural way of defending itself when it thinks it is starving.

Agree 100%!! My hair loss really caught me off guard and freaked me out, but happily it has mostly grown back (but given me natural layers). Nothing I did prevented or helped it. I think it's just a natural process that you have to ride out. I think I easily lost half of my hair, but no one ever noticed. You won't lose it all though, so no worries there.

While there's no guarantee anything will prevent or help hair loss, sometimes the right nutrition and supplements can help.

Not only will weight loss cause Hair loss but so can surgery. In the past, I'd always had thinning hair after being under anesthetic. This is actually very common.

I started taking Biotin a year ago. I had two surgeries in less than a month this spring and have had zero hair loss. I firmly believe the fact I was already on Biotin before the surgeries, and eat a healthy diet, is the reason I didn't lose any hair.

I've had major Hair loss but I just started tracking my Protein and I'm not getting enough. Upping my protein now so hopefully this will help also take Biotin but that just promotes Hair growth like making it longer. But I and my stylist really see a major difference, it's so thin now, I hate it but its my fault for not getting my protein in.

I have a question. I want to take Biotin, but my biotin supplement is a small liquid gel capsule. I cannot swallow a gel cap right now. Will I ever be able to take it or is there another way to take it? Thanks wise experienced bandsters! I cannot afford to lose hair...I don't have that much to begin with!!!

The Biotin gel caps I take are about the size of a pea. I have no problems whatsoever swallowing them.

Perhaps ask your doctor if it's safe for you take?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
