no protien shakes two weeks after surgery???

Hey everyone I haven't posted in a while, but today I posted something on my instagram about not being able to eat during the day and wanted to know if anyone else was in my same boat, turns out a lot of us are the same way so that's why they drink shakes in the morning. And this girl who doesn't even have her band yet told me to stop drinking Protein Shakes because her doctor told her she will not be taking shakes anymore after two weeks post surgery. I think to myself how the hell are you going to get the Protein and calories you need especially two weeks after?? So my question to you all is have any of you heard this or had your doctor tell you to stop drinking shakes? My doctor always stresses me about drinking at least two shakes and to get 60-80 grams of protein a day and at least 1000-1200 calories a day and I could never get that if it wasn't for my shakes. I know every doctor is different but even being on this site I've never heard anyone say anything about no shakes.

On a side note I'm 5 months post op and down 73 lbs!!!

Hey Tina, I'm with you. I don't do shakes all the time, but they are always stocked in my pantry as my go to. Sometimes the band's tightness fluctuates (time of day, hormones, dehydration, hell the weather) so shakes are a great way to ensure nutrition when you know food is going to be problematic. It's also a great 'on-the-go' option for those rushed days. 60-80g Protein can be achieved w/out the shakes. I don't consume as many cals as your doc recommends also. Just need to look for those high protein options but I wouldn't get rid of your shakes. Do you use them as meals or just supplements between meals :)

My doctor also told me "no liquid calories", and that included Protein Drinks. I, however, have two Protein drinks a day. I have one at 8am and one at 2pm. I do not have an appetite until 4pm. I receive 60g of protein, and 320 calories a day from the protein drinks that I wouldn't receive otherwise. My doctor understands my situation and supports this option for me. I wish you the best of luck!

My dr was very firm about this. No Protein shakes after the healing period. So except for 24 hours after a fill, I'm not supposed to have Protein Shakes (i.e. don't drink my calories).

I've never done drunk Protein Shakes as part of my diet in all the years I've been banded. I get Protein from actual food.

But each to their own.

I am supposed to be on liquid 2 weeks after surgery so the dr has me on shakes , what on earth is that person supposed to eat that soon after

Thanks everyone for your advice. I use my Protein Shakes as meals because otherwise I wouldn't eat. My crazy work hours don't really allow me the time to eat Breakfast for lunch. But I'm also not hungry until around 6pm so for me it's very important to have my shakes, I too get 60gs of Protein and about 350 cals I wouldn't get if I were to eat. I guess I should mention that I don't eat meat, I never have. Sometimes I'll eat fish or tuna but no chicken no beef. I also juice everyday. My doctor understands I need my liquid calories or else I'll be malnourished. Like I said every doctor is different and no one person ever has the same Lapband experience. What works for me may not work for others, but that's what our band is about, it's a tool to help us all lose weight in a healthy way =)

Protein shakes are nothing more than liquid food. But sometimes (especially early in the day) it can be difficult to eat much solid food so they are a quick fix. Also handy as a matter of convenience sometimes when good or tolerable food choices aren't readily available. It's always better to eat solid foods when you can but Protein Shakes are a better option than skipping nutrition or making bad choices. Never skip meals! Particularly important when you first wake and your body is catabolic from fasting while sleeping. Also remember there is a stark difference between a true Protein shake and a Meal Replacement shake. Always read the ingredients!

I drink them now because I'm on post op week 1 other than that no food so for now thats my option but I am getting so all done with liquid....

Ahh it makes sense then. My partner is vegetarian and he had Protein Shakes every morning to supplement his Protein intake. I think I would too if I didn't eat meat (but I do lol)

I am 6 days post op and don't want to even think that I cant have a Protein shake..... Fear of eating just set in LOL!!! That's Krazy Talk! Not sure if I even know how to use a Fork anymore! BTW I am @royalrags on instagram

You have to be creative to get your prrotein. My NUT always said don't eat if you are not hungry and you should never be too tight and not be able to eat real food. She also was not worried about getting 60g of Protein once healed. She reminded me that if we ate like we were supposed too,even with real food, you may not get 60g every day. I have followed her word to the tee, had blood work done every 3 months and have not had any problems.

I do not drink any Protein and didn't after three months. It took a while for my brain to listen!

I used to drink Protein Shakes every morning because my band felt too tight until the afternoon. I don't see anything wrong with having one in the morning to get a good start on Protein for the day. My PA said no more than one a day after the healing period because eating solid food would keep me feeling full longer and she was right. There were times when sick that I would drink protein supplements (like BariWise juice drinks) and not eat much. Since meeting goal, and maintaining without the band, I have one day per week when I have a "liquid day." I have a Protein Shake in the morning, protein Soup for lunch, etc. (It's really more like a soft food day because I have Greek yogurt and cottage cheese sometimes.) It's just kind of like a reset for the week. :-)

What is the difference between the two?

Meal Replacement shakes have Vitamins and minerals consistent with a complete meal, however, many are very loaded with sugar and are much higher in calories than just a Protein shake, which are normally lower in carbs and high in protein...

      Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

      The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

        Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
