Hiatal hernia and not burping??

Recommended Posts

Any long term banders with HH repair: I've been reading that once you have this repair, that burping is no longer possible?? Is this true?? I feel if I could just get one good burp in, I would feel great ( 8 days postop) and the thought of it NEVER happening freaks me out

You'll be able to burp again.

You're probably feeling pressure from the air they pump in during surgery. That air is in your abdominal cavity, not your digestive system, that's why you can't burp it up.

Walking is the best way to help your body reabsorb the air faster. A heating pad can help ease the discomfort too.

I have the same problem (2 days post op) and my doc told me there won't be any burping for a while. I feel like a burp would make me feel SP MUCH BETTER :(

I had the HH repair, as well. Took 3 or 4 days to burp. You will!

I have had several really small burps, but my body tries constantly, and it feels like it just gets pushed back down and that hurts and then it immediately goes right to my left collar bone where the pain is constant

I had an HH repair and I have been burping alot--not that I want to! Every time I burp, it hurts and then hurts in my left shoulder so it is not a pleasant experience. My shoulder pain is not constant though...comes and goes. Keep walking, take Gas x and put the heating pad on your shoulder. My heating pad has been on for 6 days straight! My tummy is still quite sore but most gas pain is gone thank goodness.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
