Question @ what happens on day of surgery, which is July 1st

Recommended Posts

My brother was planning to come for my surgery on July 1st, but now has an abscessed tooth causing him a tremendous amount of pain! He went for part 1 of the root canal today and will have to have parts 2 & 3 next week, so won't be here for my surgery. I am really alright with that, as I have others who have volunteered to be available for taking me to the hospital, checking on me, helping out, etc., since I live alone. I am mostly looking forward to just being in my house, my own space, and reaching out, as needed. My dogs will require me to get up and move around to take care of them, as since they are small, their care is not too taxing!

My question is about the day of my surgery. My doctor has given me the sense that I will have to be at the hospital at the crack of dawn. (I'll find out the time for sure tomorrow.) Is there any real reason for me to ask my friends to stay at the hospital with me or to come back before they get the call that it's almost time to pick me up? I'm thinking no because I assume that I will be pretty out of it, coming out of the anesthesia, etc., but just wanted some other opinions. Any other thoughts from anyone that I should know about as far as my friends being / staying at the hospital or not?

Thanks so much!

I think I got to the surgical center around 9am and was out by 1:30pm. My wife just hung out there I think. Maybe she took me, asked them to call her when I was done and grabbed lunch. I can't remember for sure but it was pretty low key and casual as far as surgery goes. It wasn't like she was waiting on them to deliver a baby or anything. Lol.

My surgery center required my husband to stay just in case of any complications. Given that we were about 1 1/2 hours from the center, it was kind of mutual anyways. I checked in at 8am and was out by 1pm I think, could have been earlier. As far as when you get home HAVE SOMEONE THERE WITH YOU! I honestly thought I would just sleep, but the pain got bad and I actually needed the initial help for the first 24 hours especially with my dogs. My husband had the day off which was great, but he was going to take it off regardless.

I'm so excited that you band tomorrow! I am one week out - I band on the 9th. Keep me posted on your experience this week. I've been reading everything I can put my hands on, but I still want more!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
