Port question?

Recommended Posts

Question for people who have been banded for a while.... I have had my band for about a year, and I'm still having port troubles. If I wear jeans it will hurt. I wore jeans for two days this week, and now I actually have a bump that moves around easily under my skin. (I switched to a stretchy skirt today.)

I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this type of problem?

You might need a port revision. I think they can be rather common and are a somewhat simple surgery compared to the lapband itself. I'd talk to your doctor about it. Sometimes the port can be placed weird or there could be a problem where the tubing goes through the abdominal wall. Either way, I'd talk to doc about it.

The port is usually placed between the skin and the muscle of the abdominal wall, and it is usually sutured to the muscle mass beneath it. My port does not move. I can't speak for everyone, or for what other doctor's do.

But, this might be a good question to ask your doctor about. My own opinion is that it is NOT normal for a port to move freely beneath the skin.

My port hurts too but it doesn't move around. The more weight I lose the more it hurts when I wear any clothes that is a little tight at the waist line. I have a fill in surgeon for my regular surgeon for a while. My surgeon was deployed to Afghanastan and who knows when he will back. I told the full in surgeon and he shrugged it off so am I just a whinny baby or should I be concerned for the discomfort?

Ok, I saw my doctor today, and actually had an upper GI done.

The loose thing I'm feeling IS my port. My insurance isn't paying for follow up care, so I'm not having a revision, but they said everything will be fine. He said certain waist bands can cause discomfort, but not to worry.

All was well withy upper GI, too. He checked because I reported heartburn.:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
