maryb 1 Posted May 5, 2006 Please take someone with you! You never know what kind of condition you will be in after the surgery. Anesthia makes me crazy for a couple of weeks. You want to be sure and make it back home.
argon 3 Posted May 5, 2006 I've heard of people doing it... but I don't think I could have. If for no other reason, than to have someone to carry my luggage! Find someone, if you can... who's gonna pass up a trip to Mexico! (I'll come, if you're paying! )
Boo 3 Posted May 5, 2006 I brought my husband with me, but many other patients were there alone. They seemed perfectly happy and confident going through it alone. You do have nurses and doctors to help you. And if you make friends with other patients ahead of time, you could check on each other. I made a great friend through lbt that was banded the day after I was. I was able to meet her before her surgery and show her that everything was okay with me. And then I checked on her after hers. I also made a friend there who was alone, and we check on each other, still. The surgery isn't really that traumatic UNLESS you have some serious complication. But it really depends on your peace of mind. I never go to the hospital here in the US alone. If I have surgery, I make my husband stay with me all night. So I'm a baby! I do have to admit that after arriving at the center, and meeting the doctors, I was completely comfortable and confident. But, prior to the surgery I was very nervous, so I appreciated having my husband there to lean on! As we crossed the border, I kept asking him, "Do you think I'm crazy??" Good luck in your decision!! tinaj 0 Posted May 5, 2006 hi, i was banded on 4/27/06 in mexico by dr. oritz and i went alone. no problems!!!! felt very safe and even did some shopping. i will say the drugs were pretty strong but I just slept slept slept. my sister could never go alone she is more of the nervous type even when it just comes to traveling but if that type of thing doesn't bother you then go for it. mexico is not iraq and i a not sure what all of the hype is over. i just wouldn't drive there. know yourself. if your not one comfortable going places alone, restraunt, movie, short weekend, then I would definitely wait. It is surgery and you don't need any additional stress. If your generally pretty comfortable then go for it. I did and have no regrets it worked out for me. good luck, tina

CATCHUP 0 Posted May 5, 2006 I Am Trying To Decide. I Am Fighting With My Own Mind. I Probably Need To Go Alone So That I Can Save Money For The Next Flight Out There For A 6-8wk Checkup.
Elisabethsew 50 Posted May 5, 2006 Surgery is not to be taken lightly and complication DO happen. I would highly advise NOT going alone.

siestaqh 0 Posted May 9, 2006 I was one of the "loners" who went to Dr. Ortiz and was banded the same day as Boo. I have to say that the whole adventure was absolutely uneventful (except for the delayed flight out of SFO coming home). I enjoyed meeting others who were either just getting the surgery or there for follow-ups, but I also enjoyed my "alone" time. The room and setting was lovely, and I went shopping the day before the surgery then just "zoned out" the day afterward. The actual time of the surgery and post-operatively was well supervised by the staff, and I think it would have been a real bummer for someone to sit and watch me sleep/read/watch TV the next day. I think if I would have taken someone with me, I would have felt obligated to be more active and social than I really wanted to be. At all times, I felt entirely safe and knew I had the staff available at short notice if I needed them, but I didn't. Since I had a hectic time immediately before and knew I was coming home to another one, I thought of the time as a welcomed vacation. CCBSTX 0 Posted May 9, 2006 Once you decide and set a date, maybe your can post your Doctor and date. Possibly, you may meet another LBT person and at least have some support while you are there. Maybe, even letting the surgeons office know that you are traveling alone. If they know of another patient also traveling alone and scheduled the same day, you can allow them to give out your number or e-mail address for a contact. That way you'll know of someone else, when you are there. Who knows? You may meet a new friend and support. Good luck. Shawn
