I am not dieting. I'm enjoying life with a band.

Maybe it's semantics but I'm not sure there's much difference between 'dieting' and following a diet. I know for me, if I don't follow a certain diet I gain weight quickly. When I eat 'normally' or how I want to eat I gain weight. It's only when I choose to eat foods that aren't filled with sugar and carbs can I keep the weight off. So am I dieting per se? Hard to tell...but I will honestly say that I have to live a certain diet, even with the band, if I don't want to be extremely overweight again.

I can honestly say I have been on both sides of this issue.

I originally had my band placed in December of 2009. For the first year, I loved my band. I found I did not "diet". I just ate smaller amounts, no longer binged and exercised regularly. The weight flew off. Within about 9-10 months, I had lost almost 80 pounds. I could eat anything I wanted within reason. There really were no foods off limits. I just chewed really well and it worked. The band was the best thing I ever did! I looked good but more over, I felt good.

Then my gallbladder began to give me trouble and I started vomiting. Ultimately my band slipped and I developed a hiatal hernia. I had surgery to remove the gallbladder, repair the hernia and I had to have a new band put on. After that the surgeon had trouble finding my "sweet" spot. I would either be too tight or not tight enough. A problem I had never had before. I slowly began to creep up in weight. It took about 8 months but we finally found the sweet spot and things were starting to go good.

Then I got sick again. I had to be hospitalized for an illness that forced the doctor to remove all the Fluid from my band again. After that I was disheartened. I hated my band! I began to gain even more weight and decided I was done with it. I went on for about six or seven months and continued to gain back my weight until I was 20 pounds heavier than when I started!

Then several months ago, I was looking through some old pictures on my phone and found one of me when I had initially lost those 80 pounds and it brought back a flood of emotions! I began to remember what that girl was like when she loved her band! How she felt, the way she ate and I wanted that again.

I returned to the surgeon renewed. We have been working hard to find my "sweet" spot again and are very close. I do experience some restriction and am feeling much better about my band again! I just have a few bad habits that I have developed through my troubles that I need to break. The biggest of those is drinking while I eat. I was able to do that the first go round but I need to stop as I think it has gotten in my way. (By the way, that was VERY hard to confess and see in black and white!)

Thanks for reading. I hope my story does not make you doubt your decision. I have just had an interesting journey and know what it is like to both love and hate your band.

I hope to keep up on this thread as I have found it very motivating. Thanks to all who have posted.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
