How many Pre-Op appointments before surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I'm interested to know how many appointments people had from consultation to surgery? I know this can vary greatly with insurance vs. self-pay etc.

2 with PCP, 2 with surgeon, 4 with nutritionist, 2 with psychiatrist, 3 support groups - and I will have 1 pre-op meeting for bloodwork, EKG, etc. from first meeting to my Sched surgery date it will be 7 months and 1 week. I have CIGNA insurance and each appt (except support group) has been a $30 co-pay. I'm not sure what the deductible will be for the surgery - I think it might be $600.

Im going thru all the appts. now...so far one with primary, one with surgeon, one support group, one dietician support group, one with pulmonologist they did breathing tests, that one led to 2 more one for chest xray and one for sleep study, one with cardiologist where they did ekg that led to two more, one for echocardiogram and one for pharmacological stress test, of course i had to have a follow-up with pulmonologist to discuss sleep test study, blood work at lab, and I still have to go for my upper gi series, and one appt with the dietician and psychologist.....this was all on top of 6 mos supervised doctor visits....

...after all that is complete i need to see my primary again for clearance (like all of the above wasnt enough....lol) Then i will submit to GHI, my insurance, and hope for approval...

Alot of work...but it will all be worth it if I get approval and get banded as soon as I can!! :D

Good luck to you!! :)

I will have my first appointment with the surgeon on July 3rd. I am self pay so I am not sure what to expect as far as a time frame. I am excited to get the surgery over with, but I know all of the appointments before hand are necessary and for my benefit. I'm just impatient!

Yea - once made the decision to get the band (after almost 2 yrs of back burner thinking about it) I wanted to get it done the next day. In the end I think I got a lot out of the appts I had over 7 months and I feel better prepared now to be successful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
