GERD and Weight Loss Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

HI, I have gerd. I wanted the gastric sleeve but my doctor says im not a candidate for this procedure. I'm considering the lap-band. Anyone out there have a GERD problem and has done either of these procedures ? If so which one and how are you doing?

I had severe GERD for 20+ years and had lapband. My hiatal hernia was repaired during the surgery and I now rarely have symptoms unless my band is too tight.

I had my hernia repaired and my stomach was in the wrong place and that was fixed when I got the band. I took 6 pills (prescription) just to eat and as soon as I had the band, no meds except the usual Vitamins and minerals that you need to take.

Good luck.

I had a hernia, was repaired after I recived my band but a few years after being banded I am sure I have a nother hernia because I must take medication daily to avoid acid reflux.

I have pretty bad LPR (Laryngopharyngeal reflux). It's acid reflux, but it backs up into my throat. My throat swells & it feels like a lump or glob of something that you can't swallow down. My voice also gets very hoarse. No heartburn.....just the throat issue. However, like GERD, it's dangerous because all of the acid and swelling can lead to cancer.

I had a hernia repair during surgery, which I had hoped would resolve a lot of this issue. But I haven't noticed much of a difference. As a matter of fact, I went back on Prilosec/ 40mg a day. I do much better when I don't eat anything within two hours of bedtime. food in the stomach will cause the reflux no matter what.

My internal medicine PCP has advised me that due to my long history being treated for GERD, I am not an acceptable candidate for the sleeve.

I am currently having reflux complications with my band after just less than a year.

It would be helpful for you to address your concerns with a qualified physician.

I'd have to agree with sojourner, I'd go see a gastroenterologist and have them evaluate your situation first. having a band is no guarantee that your gerd will go away or lessen. The band is placed right at the GEJ (end of esophagus beginning of stomach) so maybe that is why he suggested the band? Thinking that the pressure of the band would help to close the esophageal sphincter?

But as other's here have mentioned reflux seems to be one of those things that can happen with the band. I'd hate for you to go through the surgery and end up getting worse. :(

GOOD LUCK on your decision and keep us posted

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
