Quick question, I was just banded a few days ago on Friday and this past Sunday, I went to Mass. I received Communion and took some Wine as well (tiny amount to help the host dissolve). I wonder if I should have done that so soon since I am obviously still on liquids. Do you think I could have hurt anything by doing this? I know I'm not supposed to have solids or alcohol. How soon did others start receiving Communion after surgery?

Probably fine. I'm assuming you felt full as you would still have been swollen? With bands we need to remember that we haven't had our stomach cut on the inside. We have the same mechanics as before we just have bit that is made smaller. Some people experience all sorts of symptoms but most have none.

The small amounts involved will not hurt you.

I would like to believe the body and blood will not only not harm you, but will bless your band. Good luck to you!

Instead of drinking the wine, why don't you dip? I find that the little wafer soaks up the wine pretty well and makes it melt in your mouth. I also agree with Quahog, your band is now extra special and blessed :)

Some Catholic churches do not allow dipping (intinction) and I may have misspelled that. I went to a church that did not allow it and visitors were often confused. I doubt the small amount of host or wine will hurt.

Thanks everyone. My chest was feeling a bit tight on Sunday, but that was probably less about taking Communion and more about being a bit swollen on the inside. I'm still a bit tight, but it comes and goes.

And yes and probably most important it was great to be at Mass on Sunday. I was praying for a long time that I was making the right decision. God continues to constantly bless me and I'm so thankful for that.

Love the dip idea, but have to say it really cracked me up when I read it!!

There is a word for dipping?! Oh my, I am as religious as the next guy, but this concept is new to me. I like the idea, less germs.

Actually, the idea gained favor after AIDS became so well known. Seems in the early days of AIDS people were terrified, and to some extent rightfully so, that the Roman and Anglican churches, in some areas of the world, thought this was a great idea. In the State of Washington it almost caused a schism in the Roman church. Western Washington, the more liberal side, wanted nothing to do with "dipping" or intiction(sp) and the Eastern side of the state's diocese wanted only "dipping." Depending upon which side of the state I was on I was dipping or drinking.

Love that...dipping or drinking! I agree I don't think I ever been anywhere other than at college ( I had the BVM sisters who are known to be crazy! Lol) where dipping was allowed but if you did it and you tolerated it I doubt you did any damage! But then again we are Catholics so guilt is our middle name!

Well it's Thursday and I'm still here!! I'm going to get a little crazy and go to Mass again on Sunday and take Communion. God is probably laughing and smiling that I was even worried about this. For the record, he did get a big thank you for helping me get this far and through the surgery. I am very excited about the blessing of having my health and life back. With his help and grace of course, I know this is possible!!

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
