Hey Everyone! Questions here! I just turned 21 last August and I've been on a pretty strict plan on making better choices with what Alcohol I consume but I was wondering if there are any low calorie drink recipes you have? Or have you completely stopped intake of Alcohol all together? My sugery is in a few weeks and I'm willing to make any changes to be successful. I know nothing carbonated, of course but I know you could drink the calories away if I wasn't paying attention. What is everyones opinion? Thanks guys! :)

I think in moderation you'd be fine. I like a drink now and again. Heck, I freely admit the drinks I like are high calorie, too. However, when I do have one, I am just careful to count the calories towards my daily total.

My drinking days are Sundays. I preplan everything. I double my workouts, plan my meals and make sure I stay within my target calories intake. My drink of choice is a shot of a low cal vodka and Zero Vitamin Water. Blueberry Pomegranate is one of my favorites. My advice to you is to plan you day and do some research on your favorite alcoholic drinks and find a healthier alternative. Remember alcohol has empty calories. So choice wisely :)

My doctor told me alcohol would be absorbed into my system a lot faster after banded, so it might be best to start with careful moderation. I try to avoid the stuff, but there are social occasions when I do imbibe.

I only miss it on St Patty's day when I typically had a pint or two of Guinness. Darn carbonation....

I had a party to go to last sat the 15 th June and I was banded 5th June. I called my surgeon on 13th and asked him if I could drink alcohol. He said if I have had no indigestion I could drink non carbonated but if I had any discomfort, I should stop. I drank vodka with Fresh orange and ALOT of them! My stomach was fine and I'm back on track with the weight loss. A bit of a stupid risk but at least I called my surgeon first.

My feeling is, only have a glass of wine once in awhile. Alcohol slows down weight loss, because our bodies don't recognize it as any kind of food source; it only stores it as fat. If you want to drink once or twice a week, be prepared that your weight loss may not go as quickly as you might like.

ALL that being said, I hadn't had anything to drink for close to three months before Memorial Day. Then I went to a BBQ, and drank close to (if not) an entire bottle of wine. It was SO good!! Haven't had any since, but I allowed myself that day. If the metabolic issues of alcohol were different, I'd be drinking a hell of a lot more often! When I get closer to my goal weight, I'll probably indulge a bit more. And I WILL count it. Only problem is, drinking also spikes my appetite, and brings down my defenses toward eating :rolleyes:

Haha! I bet! It's going to hard for me at certain times, I'm Britsih and my dad drinks more beer than he does Water. In the end though, the positives out weigh everything! :)

Rewind! I'm American, but parents are British. My dad is very supportive though. :)

Lots of different OPINIONS about this..and its evolving, just like it should as more information is gathered/studied. As far as carbonation: I don't drink soda as I have no desire to, but I can drink beer now, NO PROBLEM...almost four years post banding. I didn't for the first year or so.

I'll post links from doctors and let you decide if you trust them....

Diet soda = "As much as you want", per Dr. O'Brien's Golden Rules. He's considered a lapband "pioneer" surgeon...

"Any calorie containing liquids will tend to flow past the restriction of the band and not give you any feeling of satiety. You are then more likely to take too much. You are only allowed to drink: Water mineral Water tea or coffee (with low fat milk if you wish but no sugar) low calorie soft drinks (but be careful with the gas) An exception to the “no liquid calorie” rule is a glass of wine with meals which we have shown is good for your health and good for your weight loss when taken in a modest amount."

Of course, you should consult with your doctor to determine his/her recommendation.

Wow! Thank you so much! My Lapband Doctor is very strict on the no carbonation rule for the time being. I have not had any soda, diet or regular in about 6 months, I started to prepare before hand. This is very informative. Thanks A LOT!

That's what I like to hear I'm 22 and was worried about not being able to drink again unfortunately I drink beer at least 15-20 if I'm at a party those days will be gone now from what I hear my surgery is scheduled for this Thursday the 20th

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
